Examples:
CLIENT: “You know, I haven’t heard from
any of them, and if they are not too busy,
then they could at least call me.”
C’LOR: “You feel forgotten, left out.”
Exercise:
C’LEE (a teacher): “Well, it’s almost like a
double-edged guilt in a way. On the one hand,
I feel like I’m not getting all the teaching
work I need to get done, and on the other hand,
I’m not taking care of the needs of my family.”
C’LOR:
Paraphrasing
Its Purpose: To let the client hear what the
essence of his statement is.
Its Process: The c’lor rephrases the client’s
statement in a way that communicates
to the client the former’s understanding
of what the client has said.
Examples:
“This is what I heard you saying…”
“You are telling me that…”
CLIENT: “Ya know, my father isn’t such a bad
guy. He tries hard, but his life is tough. Sometimes
when he comes home from work he’s drunk.
Then no one knows what to do. Should we be quiet?
Should we be happy and greet him? We never know what
to do.”
C’LOR: “When your father comes home drunk,
you don’t know what he’ll be like, so you don’t know
how to act.”
CLIENT: “Yes, that’s it. It’s so hard. I never know what
to do, and it’s scary.”
Exercise:
CLIENT: “When I’m angry with my friend,
I just change the subject or walk away.”
C’LOR:
Giving Feedback
Its Process: The c’lor is simply telling the
client what he sees and hears while they are
together.
Examples:
“I see that you are smiling.”
“I heard your voice crack when
you said ‘daughter’.”
Exercise:
CLIENT: “I feel isolated, like I’m an island.
There are no other people on this island. No one
will ever find this island.”
C’LOR:
6. Clarifying
Its Process: This is a response from the c’lor
to encourage clients to be clear about what
they are truly feeling and experiencing.
C’lor’s Intent: To explore a vague or incomplete
statement by the client.
Examples:
“Tell me more about that”
“Uh-huh”

Exercises (To encourage expansion):
CLIENT: “I’m so concerned about my son.
I try to help, so I call him a lot and try to be
there….”
C’LOR: “And…”
CLIENT: “I’m afraid I’ll drive him away.”
CLIENT: “As I started to put it into context,
it feels less heavy. It still feels challenging
and somewhat intimidating….It doesn’t feel
quite as heavy (silence for approximately 20 seconds).
The whole matter of childhood tapes…”
C’LOR: “Tell me more….”
CLIENT: “Suddenly one starts hearing voices
from those old tapes and there is something around
the issue of perfectionism….I’ve been trying to get a
better sense of where that stuff comes from.”
Exercises: (To Encourage More Specificity)
CLIENT: “But it’s quite a responsibility being
a parent. You look back at all the mistakes….
I feel good about the communication between
me and my kids.”
