METACOGNITIVE READING REPORT #3

Identity Politics in Education

1. Three (3) things that you significantly learned from the readings.
Before reading the article, I used to think that The LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual,
and transgender) group is opposed by the Roman Catholic Church. Because it opposes the
teachings of the Catholic Church. However, after reading the article, I discovered that the
church demonstrates that everyone deserves to be treated equally. In 2013, Pope Francis
declared that he felt homosexuals should be treated with dignity and have their spiritual
needs met. This only shows that certain religions, such as the Roman Catholic Church,
can adapt to societal changes throughout time.
Before reading the article, I used to think that we know nothing about identity
politics. Then, after reading the article, I realized that it incorporates people' propensity to
make political claims, promote political ideas, and align social and political agendas with
identity categories. Furthermore, it involves the pressure and fights over the right to
highlight and define specific groups' outlines and fixed "nature," which is visible in society
and impacts many, including LGBT people and immigrants from other countries.
Before reading the article, I used to think that we have the "American Dream," and
it has been taught in me since I was a child that the United States of America gives the
finest service to its people: free education. With these American liberties came the idea of
a better life. However, after reading the article, it opened my eyes to the realities of the
"American dream," which most people desire to accomplish, particularly those born and
raised in third-world nations. As a result of these advantages, prejudice towards non-
Americans became apparent.
2. What are the three (3) things about the reading that are unclear to you?
i. The Player v. Doe can still be further elaborated.
ii. How Identity Politics emerged or started in the field of education through
the years.
iii. The concept of Cohesion was vaguely described and explained.

3. What are the three (3) questions you want to ask about the reading?
i. What specific steps might be taken to reduce identity politics, particularly
in the realm of Education?
ii. Can identity politics be entirely abolished in society?
iii. Are there any laws in place to protect the aforementioned minority groups?
