Reliability and Availability
– Network redundancy

Sustain Production
Experion SCADA Points
• Composite data structure: Several field values in one point
• One Analog point for a control loop
– PV, SP, OP, Mode, Aux1-4, Alarms
• One Status point for a valve
– PV, OP, Mode, Alarms
• E.g. temperature loop uses 1 analog point:
• Process variable (PV) to record the current oven temperature
• Output variable (OP) to change the temperature of the oven
• Setpoint (SP) to specify the correct oven temperature
• Mode (MD) to change the loop from manual to automatic control
• 4 auxiliary parameters for other uses (e.g. PID tuning constants)
• Unlimited User Defined parameters (e.g. storing related calculations or
a device serial number)
• Different Scan rate for parameters
• 300,000 points per server
8
One Experion point = many “tags” on other systems
Virtualization support
Thin Clients
• Reduction in PCs: Reduces hardware & maintenance cost
• One server runs multiple OS and applications
• Better control over USB ports: Improve security
• Reduced footprint, noise, and energy utilization

Distributed System Architecture (DSA)
Performance Breakthrough
Multiple Experion SCADA servers operate as one secure, efficient
and integrated system
• Integrated alarm summaries and reporting
• Single global database
– build points once (no mapping!)
• History stored on local server
– no duplication to support trending
• Highly Efficient Communication between servers
– uses caching, subscription and publish on change
– Supports WANs with speeds as low as 64 Kbps
– Tolerant of high latency, e.g. satellite based
communications
– Securely Traverses Network Firewalls
16
... and Continue to Grow Further
Distributed System Architecture (DSA)
• Large High Performance System
• Start from one location. Grow the system to cover multiple locations
• No duplication of data on servers
Central Control Location
