Exercise 4 : Questions on Non-Uniform Flow in Open Channel

Flow Through a Broad Crested Weir

1. Water flows in a rectangular channel with a unit discharge, q = 5.3

m3/s.m and normal depth is 2.0 m. Calculate the critical weir height to
be constructed to produce critical flow above the structure.

2. A long rectangular channel with 2.6 m wide, Manning’s n = 0.015,

longitudinal slope of 0.08% carries a discharge of 9.8 m 3/s. A broad-
crested weir height 0.95 m is built across the channel, what is the flow
depth above the weir. Draw the flow profile in the channel.

3. Water with normal depth of 1.0 m flows in a 3 m wide rectangular

channel. A constructed weir causes the original subcritical flow at its
downstream changes to supercritical flow. If the height of weir is 0.76 m
and coefficient of discharge Cd is 0.66, calculate the discharge in the
channel.
4. A broad crested weir of 0.24 m high is constructed in a long trapezoidal
open channel with a base width of 1.8 m, a side slope of 1(V): 1.5(H) on
both sides, Manning’s n = 0.017, uniform flow depth of 1.3 m and a bed
slope of 0.0012. Calculate
a) Flow depth above the weir
b) Flow depth at just upstream of the weir
c) Flow deph at just downstream of the weir

5. A broad crested weir of 1.22 m high is constructed in a long trapezoidal

open channel with a base width of 1.8 m, a side slope of 1(V): 1.5(H) on
both sides, Manning’s n = 0.017, uniform flow depth of 1.3 m and a bed
slope of 0.0012. Calculate
d) Flow depth above the weir
e) Flow depth at just upstream of the weir
f) Flow depth at just downstream of the weir
