How Can My Child Be Involved in the IEP Process

https://www.pacer.org/parent/php/PHP-c77.pdf
I really like this article titled How can my child be
involved in the IEP process for parents and for me. This
article gives me question the parents for me to ask in
making sure they understand all processes. For
instance, understand what a practical goal is and
teamwork skills. Teamwork goals are very important
because a child with a disability is going to need to
know how to work with others. As a teacher I feel I
should know how a parent understands the impact of
their child’s disability. I have found some parents do Independent Living: Is it “Public” or
not understand the impact or do not want to see the “Private?”
impact. I have a parent who thinks her child will walk Your child will benefit from to understand
one day which is so sad because she most like will what things are okay to do in the public and
never walk. There are many more great aspects in the what are gings to do in the private such is at
article. I will add this to my website. home.

Skills for Independent Living: Parents Help Build Social Skills

https://www.pacer.org/transition/resource-library/publications/NPC-47a.pdf
This article talks about different tools. One using a social skills story to build the
understanding of situation. Different examples that talked about was its ok to look at girls,
body space, teach social boundaries by using a chart, practice role playing, create
opportunities to practice skills, explore a social skill training program, and help your young
adult try social skills groups. I feel all of these are great tasks skill children and young adults
need to understand to function with in the outside world. I like how this give parents areas
of way parents can help their own child to flourish in society. The best thing I liked was at
the end a parent’s social skills action plan. This is very helpful to see what your child needs
help with and to keep the parents on track to focus on helping their child. Sometime when
out of sight parent may forget to practice with their child.
