HIMAMAYLAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

SPECIAL PROGRAM IN THE ARTS CURRICULUM

Introduction

Research on curriculum implementation is a relatively new

phenomenon and has not been a major focus among curriculum experts

until the late sixties and early seventies (Snyder, et. al., 1989).

Additional studies on the topic are vital for further improving the

field of the curriculum studies of Special Program in the Arts.

Art, is one of the most fascinating educational topic. However,

arts had never gained a major place in either public school curricula

or educational research, even if specialists in art education have

been active for many years and the fine arts are generally recognized

as important aspects of past and present culture (Gehlback, 1990).

Even in Philippine setting, the general practice of standardized

education or legally known as the Basic Education Curriculum,

Philippine public secondary high schools reduced classroom time

devoted to the arts in order to pave way and to give more focus and

attention to the tools subjects such as Math, English, and Science.

This is despite of emerging educational programs that gives focus in

recognizing arts as part and a contributor in realizing the full

potential of learning. Research such as that of Catterall (1998),

Heath (1998), and Burton et. al. (2000) found significant

relationships between

The Special Program in the Arts (SPA) is a program by the Department

of Education (DepEd) for high school students with potential or

talents in the arts, namely, music, visual arts, theater arts, media

arts, creative writing and dance. Students enrolled in SPA-identified

schools are required to take specialized 2-hour classes daily on their

specific majors beginning on their first year as part of their

curriculum. Himamaylan National High Special Program in the Arts (HNHS

SPA) aims to select promising young artists who undergo screening

process during the grade 7 enrollment. The HNHS SPA leadership analyze

their internal and external environment, issues and concern,

institutional need, physical and intellectual need of the teachers and

PRE-ENROLLMENT AND PAPER SCREENING WRITTEN EXAM INTERVIEW SKILL TEST

Table 1.1 shows the flow of the screening process that the

applicant should go through. Pre-enrollment is where the Special

Program in the Arts Coordinator together with the screening committee

of the school evaluates the applicants grades and portfolio. The

applicant should have a proficiency rating of 85% in general average

and doesn’t have any grades lower than 80%.

Written examination is to assess the ability of the applicant in

understanding basic information and fundamentals of arts. This written

examination affects the 25% of the applicants’ chance to enter the

program.

An interview will be conducted by the teachers of the Special

Program in the Arts. A set of questions is prepared for the

interviewer. The interviewer will be given a copy of the essay the

applicant did during the written exam and 25% scores will be extracted

from the interview.

The skill-test is the most important part of screening process

since it is scored in 50%. The applicants are given the chance to

choose one (1) among the different disciplines that the school

offered. They will be given 1 minute to perform in front of the SPA

teachers. There are some instances that bad performance comes because

of fear. The special Program in the Arts teachers will then conduct a

one-day training in their chosen field.

C. Retention

Students who entered the program should maintain a proficiency

rating of (85-89%) of assessment in the specialized subject and
