KOTTS
SINOPSIS
KOTTS mengandungi pelbagai aktiviti kumpulan mengikut tahap pencapaian
murid.
membangunkan potensi insan melalui penyerapan elemen-elemen kerohanian
Beberapa kajian menunjukkan bahawa mata pelajaran matematik

Masalah Penglihatan Kota Kinabalu, program inklusif SMK Badin Tuaran
mengesan kedudukan boling bolagol semasa sedang bermain permaian boling

atas alasan kekurangan deria penglihatan mereka.

Synopsis
Learning Mathematics is something that is difficult for a lot of students, as they
cannot visualize the abstract concepts. An example would be Best Fit Straight
Line for a set of data. The most common teaching and learning classroom
activity is usually just a mechanical ways of calculating the equation of the
straight line or sketching or drawing the best fit line within a set of data by try
and error. By using TPACK where content will be delivered through activities
designed by referring learning theories (Contextual - Cognitive - Constructivist)
with the support of technology such as Geometer Sketchpad may create a more
contextual, meaningful and fun ways of learning.
Before innovation implemented
A line of best fit is a straight line that is the best approximation of the given set
of data. (A,B,C,D,E,F,G)

iii) A more accurate way of finding the line of best fit is the LEAST
SQUARE METHOD (using formula/calculation to find the Equation of
the Straight Line)
Step 1: Calculate the mean of the x-values and the mean of the y-
values:

Step 2: The following formula gives the slope of the line of best fit:
Step 4: Use the slope m and the y-intercept b to form the equation of
the line:

Background
Finding the best fit straight line within a set of data (correlation between 2
variables) is one of the subtopic for MTE3053 Statistics which is compulsory
paper must be taken by PISMP Mathematics Major Students.
Students will use a formula to calculate the equation of the Best Fit Line for the
given data where they can get accurate answer but it is a meaningless learning
for them as the just process a group of symbol and number.
A better way of understanding the concept of Best Fit Line is the sketch the
test-Line by using considering the test-Line will pass through more points and
the remain points distributed equally above and below the Line. This may help
29
Koleksi Inovasi Pedagogi Kent 2015
to visualize the Best Fit Line but its difficult to get the accurate answer by try
and error.
Objectives
Learning through formula or symbolic diagram is very ineffective in learning
abstract concepts.
The main objective of the innovation is to transform this abstract concept
learning into something more concrete and more meaningful for the students by
THREE ideas.
1) Students actively involved in the learning processes where they will be
asked to create their own learning objects (Create The Best Fit Straight Line for
a set of Data by using Geometer Sketchpad)
2) Learning through Animated and Interactive Software such as Geometer
Sketchpad (GSP) will bring better understanding of the concepts compare to
abstract formula or symbol.
3) Get the accurate answer beside meaningful learning with better
understanding

Comparing the normal practice for the teaching and learning activities
with Constructivist Approach
Normally teacher will use a top-down approach with start from a common idea,
formula or algorithm then let the students follow where can consider as a
deductive learning. The student will do a lot of practices until they seems
master the idea, where they actually master the algorithm or formula and may
be do not understand the concept at all. Teacher play the main role here and
student are very passive and experiencing meaningless learning.
Constructivist approach will be a bottom-up approach where student are usually
start to make some real life observations then were asked to make some own

Concluding Remarks
With the advanced in technology, technology in education may play an
important role in making sure the success of the learning process. TPACK,
builds on Shulman’s idea of PCK, and attempts to capture some of the essential
qualities of knowledge required by teachers for technology integration in their
teaching, while addressing the complex, multifaceted and situated nature of
teacher knowledge (Mishra 2006 & 2008).
It might be conclude CK as what are going to be delivered, PK as how to be
delivered and TK as how to be delivered well or effectively. TPACK might be

PENGENALAN
badan antarabangsa Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development

berfikir aras tinggi (KBAT).
LATAR BELAKANG
Kedudukan sebelum inovasi dilaksanakan
Kajian Selidik telah dibuat oleh Kementerian Pendidikan Malaysia (KPM) untuk
mencari punca-punca keputusan TIMSS and PISA (Sains dan Matematik)
Tamil Nadu India. KPM akhirnya menyiapkan Laporan Kajian bagi menjawab
kenapa keputusan Malaysia tercorot dalam TIMSS and PISA. Laporan Kajian
Keputusan TIMSS and PISA oleh KPM menyatakan salah satu penyebab

PDf LING
SOPHIA FUI-NI TSEN
SYNOPSIS
PDf LING – Play Dough for Linguistics – is the use of play dough in linguistics
in teaching the topic of the human speech organs. The main focus of this
innovation is on improving teaching practices involving the use of a non-
linguistic strategy – homemade play dough – in the teaching of phonology in
linguistics. According to Herur, Kolagi, Chinagudi, Manjula & Patil (2011, p. 241),
play dough is “an easy to use learning tool that can help students turn both
concrete and imaginary things into colorful models”. By manipulating and
shaping colourful chunks of play dough into specific parts of the speech organs
based on 2D diagrams, it has proved to be an efficient method in helping
teacher-trainees to immerse themselves in a topic that is technical and new in
the first semester. Trainees reported that the use of play dough is fun,
interesting, attractive and colourful hence helping them to remember better.
INTRODUCTION
Play dough is a modeling compound used by young children for art and craft
projects at home and in school. Composed of flour, water, salt, boric acid, and
mineral oil, the product was first manufactured in Cincinnati, Ohio, U.S., as a
wallpaper cleaner in the 1930s. It was later patented as Play-Doh to Noah
McVicker and Joseph McVicker (Davbm, 2006).
According to Herur, Kolagi, Chinagudi, Manjula & Patil (2011, p. 241),
play dough is “an easy to use learning tool that can help students turn both
concrete and imaginary things into colorful models”.
The use of play dough also involves the use of Multiple Intelligences
(MI) a model by Gardner (1983) as it greatly heightens the bodily kinesthetic
and visual senses.
Play dough has been heavily used in the modeling of the anatomy of
the human bodies in the medical field (Eftekhar, Ghodsi, Ketabchi & Ghazvini,
2005; Herur, Kolagi, Chinagudi, Manjula & Patil, 2011; Sri Nageswari, Malhotra
& Gurjit Kaur, 2004; Stone, 2003). Besides that, it is also used among pre-
school children in improving their fine motor skills while playing and in early
primary schools in the geography lessons (Vosniadou, Skopeliti & Ikospentaki,
2004).
PDf LING involved the adoption and adaptation of homemade play
dough in the learning of a specific topic on the organs of speech in the PISMP
TESL programme. It is neither the introduction nor the invention of a new
product or idea. Rather it is the incorporation of a non-linguistic strategy, which
is the use of homemade play dough in the teaching of linguistics. The focus is
on improving teaching practices (pedagogy) in the teaching of phonology in
linguistics.

TARGET
The target group for this innovation are the 20 teacher-trainees from the PISMP
TESL (SJKC) January 2014 Intake. The subject was TSL3013 – Introduction to
Linguistics. The innovation was carried out while teaching Topic 3 – Phonology
(Organs of Speech). The study was carried out for one week as it is a small-
scale study.
BACKGROUND
Pre-Implementation of Innovation
Prior to the implementation of innovation, the students were asked to draw the
speech organs. As anticipated, students had poor perception and
understanding of the organs of speech despite an overview and lessons in
PI1352(P) Language Development in Semester 1 of the PPISMP TESL
Foundation Course.
The researcher, however, did not anticipate the heavily segmented
diagrams drawn by some students which highlighted students’ poor
understanding and / or lack of pre-reading.
Figure 1 shows some of the students’ perception of the organs of
speech prior to the implementation of innovation.

Figure 1: Samples of Students’ Perception of Speech Organs
The samples above revealed the need for a more hands-on and
practical strategy in reinforcing students’ theoretical understanding of the topic.

Uninspiring 2D diagrams
As the subject is heavily theoretical-laden, the unit for phonology in which the
organs of speech is revealed display two-dimensional (2D) cross-sectional
diagrams. These diagrams may be unable to ease students’ understanding of
the various parts.
Figure 2 shows the samples of cross-sectional diagrams of the organs
of speech found on the Internet.
OBJECTIVES
The objectives of this study are:
a) to introduce a hands-on strategy to learning the theoretical basis.
b) to introduce the element of fun in the learning of diagrams.
c) to help students explore the areas of touch and bodily-kinesthetic in
learning.
d) to aid students in having a firm grasp of the topic specified.
e) to introduce students to a cost effective and flexible medium (teaching aid)
which may be employed in future classroom practices.

Teamwork
The implementation of play dough modeling in groups also serves to facilitate
group interactions and discussion.
Hands-on
The hands-on strategy fulfills the needs of students who thrive in learning by
touch as they can understand and memorize better.
Imagination skill
Using homemade play dough for modeling also greatly heightens the
imagination and allows students to visualize the subject matter better.

BENEFITS
The benefits derived from the use of PDf LING can be categorized into three
areas.
For students
a) It helps students remain focused and engaged.
b) Students have an opportunity to assess their progress in a non-
threatening manner and proceed at their own pace.
c) Students have an opportunity to practice in trial and errors.
d) It encourages students to take “ownership” of the material.
e) It provides a context for discussing study strategies when carried out in
groups.
f) Students will possess a sense of pride in their completed models.
For educators
a) Homemade play dough may be used by any lecturers to teach various
fields such as Science, Mathematics, Geography, Visual Arts, etc.
b) As it is learner-based, lecturers need only be a facilitator.
c) It provides an opportunity for some physical activity, which tends to
enliven and “wake up” students, especially when the subject is theoretical
in nature.

CONCLUSION
st
Although the field of education is gearing towards technologies of the 21
century which tend to rely more on the digital format and being ICT-savvy, the
role and use of play dough which may be deemed as more traditional in nature
may be more helpful in the 3D reconstructions of the 2D versions found in print
and online. PDf LING therefore seeks to fill in the gap.

SINOPSIS
PENGENALAN
digariskan oleh UNESCO (Report to UNESCO of the International Commission
on Education for the Twenty-First Century Learning: The Treasure Within, 1996)

ataupun teknik kesusasteraan Hiis Kadazandusun. Situasi begini amat

Mereka
