Infer the pattern in the changes in the appearance of the moon.
I. OBJECTIVE:
Describe the changes of the moon as seen from night to night.

II. SUBJECT MATTER: PHASE OF THE MOON

A. Materials : Flashlight, globe, small ball, manila paper, pictures, video
and power point presentation
B. References: K to 12 CG S5FE-IVg-h7, Grade5 Science Lesson Exemplar
pp. 5-7
C. Process Skills: Inferring, Analyzing, Comparing
D. Value: Cooperation

III. PROCEDURE:
A. ENGAGEMENT
1. Unfreezing ( Riddle )
Sometimes, it’s O
Sometimes, it’s C
Whatever its shape
It gives light to you and me
2. Drill: Phases, sunlight, Rotation, Revolution, Apparent
3. Review: What do we call the apparent changes of the moon?
Today, we are going to know the pattern in the changes in appearance s of
the moon as seen from night to night.

B. EXPLORATION: Group Activity

1. Grouping of pupils
2. Distributing activity cards and Materials
3. Performing the activity
4. Publishing pupils work
5. Reporting

C. EXPLANATION:
1. Analysis
What have you observe during the activity?
Does the moon also take different shapes from night
to night?
What are these different changes/shapes that the
moon take?
Is it important that in whatever we do we should
always practice COOPERATION? Why?

2. Abstraction
How will you describe the apparent change in the
shape of the moon as seen from night to night?
D. ELABORATION:
Let them construct & express their own understanding that:

There are eight phases of the moon. The phases are named after how much of
the moon we can see, and whether the amount visible is increasing or decreasing
each day. It takes our moon about 29.5 days to complete the cycle through all
eight phases.
1. New moon- is the phases of the moon when the moon is not visible from
earth because the side of the moon that is facing us is not being lit by the sun.
The moon is positioned between the Earth and the sun.
2. Crescent Moon-is a part way between a half moon and a new moon, or
between a new moon and a half moon. The moon is positioned, forming an acute
angle with earth and sun.
3. Half moon- a half moon looks like half a circle. It is sometimes called
quarter moon since the moon has completed a quarter of an orbit around the
earth. The moon is positioned at right angle with the sun and earth.
4. Gibbous moon- A gibbous is between a half moon and a full moon; or
between a full moon and a half moon.
5. Full moon-A full moon appears as a round disk in the sky. The whole side
of the moon facing the Earth receives light from the sun and reflect it back to
earth. In this phase, the earth is positioned between the sun and the moon.
