23−75 EXTERNAL VIDEO MONITORING

INTRODUCTION
General
The TACS (Taxiing Aid Camera System) is an aid for the crew during aircraft
taxiing due to the increased distance between the NLG and the MLG wheels.
It lets the crew visually monitor the position of the landing gear wheels on the
taxiway by means of cameras installed on the aircraft.
The TACS can operate both by day and by night because lights are installed on
the aircraft to illuminate the monitored areas.
A CAMERA SYSTEM used for taxiing is installed on the A340−600 and
optionally the A340−500.

System Layout
Two cameras are installed on the aircraft belly and vertical fin.
Fiber optic cables are used to connect the Cameras to the CIU.
A CIU (Camera Interface Unit) manages video signals from the two cameras.

TACS SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

The CIU (Camera Interface Unit) manages video signals from the two cameras.
The display screen is selected on the camera panel 113VU either
S Captain’s PFD
S First Officer’s PFD or
S ECAM Screen
Display of TACS images on the PFDs is limited to several conditions by the
DMCs (Display Management Computers):
S Aircraft on Ground
S Ground Speed lower than 60 kts
On the ECAM screen, the TACS images have the same priority as the flight
phase related pages.

DISPLAY
BELLY TAC
The TACS display is divided in two parts.
The upper 1/3 part displays images from the Belly TAC.
S Square inserts represent a reference mark for turning. 1/3
S In the top left corner of the image,
S the aircraft Ground Speed (GS) is displayed.
The lower 2/3 part displays images from the vertical stabilizer TAC.
S The pilot can see the distance between main landing gear and the edge of VERTICAL STABILIZER TAC
the taxiway.
The TACS can operate both by day and by night because lights are installed on
the aircraft to illuminate the filmed areas.

Taxi Camera Lighting

The taxi camera lights operate under the following conditions:
S Aircraft on Ground, and
S TACS Image is shown at least on one DU and 2/3
S RWY TURN OFF & CAMERA Control Switch is set to the ON position
(on Panel 215VU)
In flight, the lighting is inhibited.

BITE SYSTEM
Cameras BITE Test
The Central Maintenance System (CMS) enables the TACS faults to be
displayed on one MCDU and to be printed on the printer.
The TACS communicates with the CMCs through two ARINC 429 low speed
buses.
Its a Type 2 BITE System.
The CMS has two operating modes:
S Normal Mode
S Menu Mode.
Normal Mode
In this mode, the TACS continually sends Class 1 fault reports to the CMC
during the flight phase.
Menu Mode
SYSTEM REPORT/TEST
In this mode, TACS data can be accessed by the user through the SYSTEM
REPORT/TEST page on the MCDU. The user pushes the line selection key
adjacent to the CAMERAS indication to establish dialog between the CMC and
the CIU.
When the TACS page is displayed, the user can access the pages described
below.
LAST LEG/GND REPORT
This page displays the internal and external faults recorded during the last
flight.
FOR TRAINING PURPOSES ONLY!

LRU IDENTIFICATION
This page displays the Part Number (P/N) and the Serial Number (S/N).

TEST
This page enables the fault to be detected and the faulty equipment to be
isolated.
