Weaning Plan for Bella and

Baby Beatrice

Disclaimer: This weaning plan was created for informational purposes only. I am not a doctor, and this is not intended to
be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Always seek the advice of your physician or other
qualified health provider with any questions you may have regarding your health or your baby’s health.

Summary of Current Situation

• Schedule is 7am, 11am, 2pm, 6pm and 10pm

• Each session is 20-25 minutes long
• Total output is about 34-36 oz per day
• First session of the day has the highest yield, and then it decreases over the course of
the day
• In the past, session(s) were dropped cold turkey
• No history of clogged ducts; possible small galactocele

Weaning Goals

• To be 100% done pumping at the end of June

• To transition Beatrice to formula after using up her frozen breast milk

Recommended Weaning Plan

Notes on Timing

The plan I have written takes about 27 days to complete (there is some variance at the
end that depends on your output at the last session). Since your goal is to be 100%
done at the end of June, I would work backwards from there and start in early June.

Detailed Plan
Since you’ve dropped sessions cold turkey before without issues, I’m going to do a
quick approach to dropping sessions, where you cut a session in half the first day, and
then drop it completely the second day.

This is the initial pace that I’d recommend, but you can make adjustments depending
on how things are going. You could slow this down by reducing the time by less each
day (say, by 5 minutes each day instead of 10-12 minutes). Alternatively, you can
speed it up by cutting the sessions cold turkey instead of reducing the time over two
days. You can also wait fewer days between dropping sessions if you’d like.

1. Drop the 2pm session.

• On the first day, cut your pumping time in half (to 10-12 minutes).
• On the second day, drop the session completely and do not pump at
this time.
• If you can, move the 6pm session up an hour or two.

2. Wait four days.

3. Drop the late afternoon/early evening (formerly 6pm) session.

• On the first day, cut your pumping time in half (to 10-12 minutes).
• On the second day, drop the session completely and do not pump at
this time.
• Shift your 11am session back a few hours if you can.

4. Wait four days.

5. Drop the midday (formerly 11am) session.

• On the first day, cut your pumping time in half (to 10-12 minutes).
• On the second day, drop the session completely and do not pump at
this time.
• You may want to push your 7am pumping session back or your 10pm
session up so they are closer together, but if you’re comfortable all
day, it’s fine to leave them where they are.

6. Wait four days.

7. Drop the 10pm session.

• On the first day, cut your pumping time in half (to 10-12 minutes).
• On the second day, drop the pump completely and do not pump at
this time.
• Pump until you’re empty at your last remaining session (even if it
means the session is longer). This will reduce the chance that you’ll
get a clogged duct.
• Note that this may feel weird the first day. Try to enjoy the extra
time!

8. Wait four days.

9. Drop the 7am session.

• This time, we will do things a little differently. Instead of reducing
the time, we’ll reduce the volume. Each day, reduce the amount
that you pump by 2 oz.
• To do this, start with the amount that you got at the 7am session
yesterday. You want to reduce this amount by 2 oz. So if you got 10
oz yesterday morning, you’d pump 8 oz and stop. The next day you
would pump 6 oz and stop, and so on.
• When you are down to only pumping 2 oz, this will be your last
morning session. Pump your 2 oz and take the next day off.

10. The following day, pump until you’re empty.

11. Congratulations - you’re done!

Other Notes

You mentioned that you feel slightly guilty about not continuing on after the six month
mark – I know it’s hard but try not to! Exclusive pumping is hard work, and making it
six months is amazing. Plus think of all the extra time you’ll have. You did great!
