Individualized Weaning Plan for

Anna and Baby Alice

Disclaimer: This weaning plan was created for informational purposes only. I am not a doctor, and this is not intended to
be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Always seek the advice of your physician or other
qualified health provider with any questions you may have regarding your health or your baby’s health.

Summary of Current Situation

• Current schedule is early morning (5:30am-6:30am), midday (12:30pm-2pm), and

evening (8:30pm).
• Each session is about 15-20 minutes.
• Total output is about 30 oz per day, with the morning session yielding the most milk.
• In the past, sessions were dropped by reducing volume and spacing closer together.
Cabbage leaves were used, but not sure if they were effective in reducing supply.
• Recent history of mastitis, history of 6-8 clogged ducts

Weaning Goals

• To be down to at least two sessions by 7/7 and to wean completely as quickly as

possible
• To transition Alice to frozen breast milk and formula full-time
• To avoid mastitis and clogged ducts!

Recommended Weaning Plan

Notes on Timing

I know that you recently had mastitis (you poor thing!) – if you’re completely
recovered, you can start now. Otherwise, I would wait until you’re back to normal.

A few things that you might want to consider before starting (as I noted in the
disclaimer, please note that I’m not a doctor):
• Lecithin is available over the counter, and some women find that it helps
prevent clogged ducts.
• Sudafed might help reduce your supply and make weaning easier.
• You can also try the cabbage leaves again and see if they help. They might not
lower supply on their own, but might reduce the chance that you get a clog.

Detailed Plan

Since you have a history of clogged ducts and mastitis, I think we should drop these
sessions very slowly. If you want to, you can slow this down even more by reducing the
volume by less each day than I’ve specified (say, by reducing the volume you pump by
1 oz each day instead of 2).

1. Drop the midday (12:30-2pm) session.

• On the first day, cut your total volume by 2 oz (about one ounce
from each breast). So since you usually get 9-10 oz, the first day, I
would stop at 8 oz.
• Make sure that you pump until empty at your bedtime session. You
might get a little more milk at this time (and it might seem
counterproductive since you’re weaning), but I think it’s important
to avoid clogs or mastitis.
• Continue this until you’re down to 2 oz.
• On the fifth day (or however long it takes you to get down to 2 oz),
drop the pump completely and do not pump at this time.

2. Wait four days.

3. Drop the bedtime (8:30pm) session.

• On the first day, cut your total volume by 2 oz (about one ounce
from each breast). You said you normally get 7-9 oz – I think that
may go up a bit as some production from mid-day shifts to bedtime.
I’m guessing you’d be at about 10 oz? If this is the case, I would stop
at 8 oz, but obviously, you may need to adjust that depending on
where you end up.
• Make sure that you pump until empty at your morning session.
• Continue this until you’re down to 2 oz.
• On the fifth day (or however long it takes you to get down to 2 oz),
drop the pump completely and do not pump at this time.

4. Wait four days.

5. Drop the morning (5:30-6:30am) session.

• We’re going to repeat the same process – for your morning pump,
take the amount that you pumped on the previous day, and reduce
that by 2 oz.
• Continue reducing by 2 oz each day until you are only pumping 2 oz.
• Do not pump at all the next day (if you really need to relieve
pressure, pump just enough to do that).

6. The following day, pump until you’re empty.

7. Congratulations - you’re done!

Other Notes

Enjoy all of the extra time and being able to sleep in! You’ve done a great job!
