I see myself as a hardworking and dedicated person. One thing I think
people should know about me is I’ll keep going for something I want until I get it. I believe that you should never give up on your goals, your desires, or your dreams, no matter how rough things get for you. While in secondary school, it was compulsory for all senior students to offer Biology, which, unfortunately for me, was a subject, I dreaded. However, after weeks and months of wishing, I could drop it, I confronted it. Then I took the bull by the horn, meeting fellow students and different Biology teachers to explain difficult topics for me, and my Biology textbook was consistently with me. I'm not sure I have worked so hard for any subject-besides English- before, but it eventually paid off. I got a distinction in Biology after my first term, in SS3 and another in my school’s mock examination. I really proved to myself that I could do anything I sent my mind on. I guess it is evident that dedication is one of my strengths. I am also a humble person; I never blow my own trumpet on any occasion whatsoever. Although I used to be so reserved in my junior school years, now I am more at ease with people. I would like to say I’m fun to be around. Moreover, I’m fond of helping others in any way I can. Anytime a fellow student asks for academic help; I sort it out amicably. If anyone is down in the dumps about something, I always do my best to help if I’m given the opportunity. Currently, I think my weakness is stage fright. I plan to combat this because the ability to speak in public is important to my future. I discovered this flaw after I participated in a national mathematics competition sponsored by Cowbellpedia. While my family watched the programme on television, I, saw for the first time how weak my public- speaking ability was. I was avoiding the quizmaster’s eyes and my attitude showed that I didn’t want to take part in any conversation. Inwardly, I was disappointed, but I resolved to take care of this weakness. Since then, I’d stand in front of the mirror speaking to myself loudly. Two years later, I qualified for a national science competition, InterswitchSPAK. While preparing for the competition, I resolved to talk as clearly as possible to the quizmaster. I wanted to watch the broadcast of the episodes and smile to myself. I kept telling myself this until I arrived at the venue for the competition. I was happy with the difference I made. Although I didn’t eventually win the competition, I was proud of myself because I dealt with my public speaking defect and spoke confidently. I believe if I continue this way, it wouldn't be a problem anymore. My hobbies include reading both fiction and non-fiction books, and playing a wide variety of games, including board games like Monopoly, Scrabble, Chess, Ludo and video games like Blur, FIFA, PGR 3 and others. I have a keen interest in sports, and now, I know how to swim and play football, and I’m learning how to play basketball. I think it's important to do more with my time than just study, hence my involvement in extracurricular activities. I know so many students apply for scholarships, and I hope that my qualities and my promise to put the scholarship to good use, would make me a strong applicant.
