MODULE 6: Research Proposal Writing

LESSON 1: Writing and Developing the First Two Chapters of the Research Proposal

APPLICATION: Let’s Apply

What You Learned

A. Give what is being asked?

1. What do we mean by research proposal?
Research proposals are written for theses and dissertations. A
written proposal is a blueprint or plan for research. A research proposal
defines and delineates the research project to be undertaken by a
researcher. As the research proposal describes the purpose, methods and
procedures, it can assure the researcher of a logical and systematic
approach in conducting his study of a research problem.

2. What are the typical parts of a research proposal?

Proposals follow a simple and logical form of presentation such as:
1. Title of the Proposed Research and its Proponent
2. The Problem and its Background
 Introduction
 Theoretical and Conceptual Framework
 Statement of the Problem
 Hypothesis of the Study
 Scope, Limitation and Delimitations
 Significance of the Study
 Definition of Terms
3. Review of Related Literature
4. Methodology
 Research Method
 Respondents of the Study
 Data Collection Instruments
 Data Collection Procedures
 Data Analysis Plan
5. Bibliography
6. Curriculum Vitae

3. What are the basic characteristics of a research proposal? Explain each briefly
The three basic characteristics of a research proposal are:
1. A proposal is a straightforward document - It has to begin with a
direct statement of the problem to be investigated and it should
not contain irrelevant details.
2. It is not a literary production -A research proposal requires
direct writing of how a research project is to be executed to
completion, with economy of words and a precision for
expression. Its language must therefore be clear, precise, and
sharp. The proposal will definitely show the ultimate precision
and clarity with which you can state a problem, outline and
describe statistical treatment of data and establish the logical
validity of a conclusion.
3. It is clearly organized -Proposals are written in conventional
prose style and thoughts are expressed in simple paragraph
form. The organization of thought or outline is indicated by the
proper use of heading and subheadings.

B. To what does each of the following refer?

Research Proposal 1. A plan or blueprint of the study the researcher will undertake.
Introduction 2. Presents the reasons for the existence of a problem to be studied.
Significance of the Study3. Identifies the beneficiaries of a proposed research.
Review of Literature 4. A summary of literature presented and reviewed by the researcher.
Scopes and Limits 5. The boundaries of one’s proposed study
The problem and it’s Background 6. Factors or characteristics that will be the focus of the
study
Hypothesis of the Study 7. Tentative answers to a research problem that have to
be validated by the study.
Section of the Definition of Terms 8. Definition of a term or concept based on how it shall be
used in a research project
Theoretical Framework of the Study9. Theory that shall serve as basis for the conduct of a
proposed research.
Conceptual Framework or the Research paradigm10. The operationalization of the
theoretical framework of one’s research
