MODULE 3 DOCUMENTED ESSAY ON A CONCEPT

LESSON 1: Academic Research and the Documented Essay in the Twenty-First Century

PRETEST
I think going out with someone you love is so special that it will be the day that you will
become happy and stress free. I do have a boyfriend but he's from Manila and that's
thousands kilometers away from me. If we go out on a date, I do have an ideal date. The
first thing that we will do is to go to parks to have a simple picnic and admire the beauty of
nature and we will talk about our future, we will talk about our plans that we can do when
we grow older. I want that feeling that we will just talk casually and romantically, just like
we're having the moment just the two of us without any distractions. We will go to
amusement parks and enjoy some fun activities, take some good pictures for memories and
play as if that will be the last day simply we will just enjoy our quality time together. I'm a
good eater if we will go out on a date I would prefer to cook some home meals and eat it
while talking, or we can eat street foods and we can also eat at fast food chains, but if I will
choose I just want to eat at home just like a regular couple no need to spend some money
just to treat me some food all I want is a food that has been cooked with love.
I think this date will be the most fun and will be the most memorable for me because we
are LDR. We really need to spend some quality time together, we need to take many
pictures for our memories. I don't need any fancy things, all I need is to feel the love that he
wants to show me. For us this will be the most enjoyable date, imagine the travel hours just
to meet me. That's a big effort for him so I will always cherish our times together.

Worksheet 1 A: Shifting to the Register of Academic Discourse

I'm the type of person who enjoys daily fun activities. I need to have some quality time
together with my loved one when he's around me because he will travel just to see me.
Going out with my loved one will be the most exciting and enjoyable day for me, enjoying a
picnic together would be fun. He's talkative too. We will not be bored even if there's just
the two of us. Just talking and eating together makes me feel special. It makes me feel that
I'm the luckiest girl in the world.
Luckily, he's a good cook, I can enjoy eating all my favorite food and I will never get tired
of talking and taking pictures together would be fun also for memories. He lives far from
me, so definitely I will cherish the moments and enjoy our quality time together because it
will take months just to see me again. This date will be exciting and fun because the man
that I will go out with on a date is the man that I love.

Before-Reading Questions
1. For me plagiarism is when one person copies the work of one person and claims that
they are the one who did it. Without giving the right credits to the real owner.
2. Katapatan means honesty, we all know that honesty is a virtue. Honesty is a facet of
moral character that connotes positive and virtuous attributes such as integrity and
being honest means sincere, loyal and trustworthy.

After-Reading Questions
1. According to the author there are three types of plagiarism
-The first and most obvious kind of plagiarism is when a person copies word-for-
word a sentence, a paragraph, a whole article, a section of a book, or different
sections of a long article or book written by another author and does not enclose the
copied words in quotation marks.
- The second kind of plagiarism is when a person borrows someone else’s ideas,
rewards them to make the ideas seem like her/his own. This becomes apparent when
there is no attribution to the original author. This means the person borrowing did
not mark the reworded ideas of another writer with a footnote or an endnote to
acknowledge
from whom s/he borrowed the idea/s.
- The third kind of plagiarism is when a person translates to Filipino or other
Philippine languages someone else's ideas that were expressed in English or other
foreign languages and fails to enclose the translated material in quotation marks.
2. Some common examples of plagiarism include:
- Submitting a full text that is not your own.
- Copying elements of different sources and pasting them into a new
document.
- Forgetting to add quotation marks to a direct quote.
- Paraphrasing a source too closely.
- Leaving out an in-text, parenthetical, or footnote citation.
3. One of the most famous recent cases of plagiarism is that of a speech made by
Melania Trump shortly after in the inauguration of President Donald Trump. The
speech is clearly similar to Michelle Obama's. The content and structure was very
similar.
4. One reason is that fellow academics are quite well read and often very familiar with
their fields, and that would include the literature in these areas. The way an
academic spot a student plagiarizing is more subtle. You’ve written an introductory
page using short sentences and all the jargon from the prescribed textbook. Here
are the TELLTALES on how to see if their work is plagiarizing:
- Too dramatically and the tone they used is not steady. The vocabulary is way
too high at their age.
- The cited work is not complete and concrete.
- No proper uses of sites and sources
- Check the internet about the sources they use.
5. According to the author the student may have become desperate (especially toward
the end of the semester) and surfs for an article on the internet in a website s/he
thinks is obscure enough. It begins with the way students in elementary and high
schools are trained. For lack of textbooks, teachers find themselves having to
require students to copy from the only textbook available in their school. But what
is often neglected is that in copying, students should always write down the source of
their notes. Studies show that students plagiarize for a variety of reasons. Among
them are failing to allot sufficient time to complete the assignment honestly, being
too proud or too shy to ask others to help with a difficult assignment, and seeing
others cheat and therefore coming to the conclusion that it’s “no big deal.”
6. According to the author, she gave F to his student and reported it to the dean and
another sanctions that she gave is that she removed two Ph. D. at her program
because of plagiarism. I think yes, because it is so hard to think or to make a book
and you will just see that someone copied your work without giving you a proper
recognition.
7. “Katapatan” means honesty and honesty means integrity, loyalty and truthfulness. I
think the author emphasizes katapatan in academic writing because you need to be
honest when you are writing something you can’t lie and you can’t copy some works
without giving the right credit it will be so unfair for the original author. Without
being honest feels like you are just fooling yourself by thinking that you are the one
who created a writing.

Writing A Documented Essay and Avoiding Plagiarism

After Reading Questions
1.According to the text, when writing an academic essay, students need to keep in mind
that all borrowed materials have to be documented. Any direct quotations, as well as “any
idea that is recorded in any form” [my emphasis] (Ventura 79), should be documented. On
the other hand, facts, data, or ideas that have gained the status of “general knowledge”
(Ventura 79) need not be documented.
2.The three main components of MLA documentation;
- Students first need to be aware of the purpose and style of the documented
essay.

student’s authority on a topic his/her know of research material (Roberts and Turgeon

fraud” (Modern Language Association 52) that plagiarism will definitely not be a part of
academic work. Stop plagiarizing, if you take words from other always use quotes and
citations always give a right credit.
