List of Cabinet Ministers 2021
The Council of Ministers exercises executive authority in India. It comprises senior ministers, who are further
classified as Cabinet Ministers, Ministers of State, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge).
On July 7th 2021 – the President of India, as advised by the Prime Minister, reshuffled the allocation of
portfolios among the members of the Council of Ministers. After the reshuffling the Council of Ministers
comprises the PM and 63 ministers. In the 2021 Council of Ministers, there are 30 Cabinet Ministers, 2
Ministers of State (Independent Charge) and 45 Ministers of State.
As per the Constitution of India, the total strength of the Council of Ministers cannot exceed 15% of the total
number of Lok Sabha MPs. The current strength of the 17th Lok Sabha is 543 members and hence the
Council of Ministers cannot be more than 81.
At the time of swearing-in, the Council of Ministers comprises the PM and 63 ministers. In the 2021 Council
of Ministers, there are 24 Cabinet Ministers, 9 Ministers of State (Independent Charge) and 30 Ministers of
State.
In the newly formed cabinet, PM Modi will hold the following portfolios:

1. Among the new ministers who were inducted into the Union Cabinet are BJP’s Narayan Rane,
Sarbananda Sonowal, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Ajay Bhatt, Bhupender Yadav, Shobha Karandlaje, Sunita
Duggal, Meenakshi Lekhi, Bharati Pawar, Shantanu Thakur and Kapil Patil; JD(U)’s R C P Singh, LJP’s
Pashupati Paras, and Apna Dal’s Anupriya Patel.
2. Twelve ministers have resigned including IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, Health Minister Harsh
Vardhan, Environment Minister Prakash Javdekar, Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank and
Labour Minister Santosh Gangwar.
