Michael Reeder was born in Dallas, Texas in 1982, by growing up there he is influenced by

the local skate and street culture. Drawing and painting in traditional mediums from a young
age, Reeder found himself drawn to the underground, unseen, yet very public form of
painting graffiti. He later moved to New York City where he received his Bachelor of Fine
Arts degree in painting from the School of Visual Arts. The US, in particular New York city,
endures as a focal point that has played a substantial role in developing modern and
contemporary art in the twentieth century. The concept of New York as a new multinational
and highly influential art hub came to be in the post war era, and the city succeeded in
affirming its dominance over Paris, which used to be considered as the most powerful global
art centre. The predominance of the political and economic structures of the United States in
the modern sphere has granted the country with a prevailing influence on the visual culture
of the world. Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art, Minimalism, Conceptual Art,
Neo-Expressionism, Graffiti and Street Art, are significant art movements that blossomed in
the US.These experiences fused with his early graffiti influence formed and grew into his
portraiture work today. Greatly influenced by the subject of defining identity, his fascination
lies within the individual self. Reeder’s process is open and free flowing, focused on allowing
the work to take on its own sense of self-identity.

Historical Context of United States

The US, in particular New York city, endures as a focal point that has played a substantial
role in developing modern and contemporary art in the twentieth century. The concept of
New York as a new multinational and highly influential art hub came to be in the post war
era, and the city succeeded in affirming its dominance over Paris, which used to be
considered as the most powerful global art centre. The predominance of the political and
economic structures of the United States in the modern sphere has granted the country with
a prevailing influence on the visual culture of the world. Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art,
Minimalism, Conceptual Art, Neo-Expressionism, Graffiti and Street Art, are significant art
movements that blossomed in the US.

Michael Reeder was born in 1982 and was predominantly influenced creatively by the
1990s. Art in the 1990s was defined at the start of the decade by a group of artists in the
United Kingdom that came to be known as the YBAs, or Young British Artists. They were a
diverse group of creatives, affiliated loosely by their age, nationality, and their association
with Goldsmiths and the Royal College of Art in London, alongside being favoured by super
collector of the time Charles Saatchi. Much of their art became famous for shock tactics and
the sensationalism of both material and message. They also became famed for their use of
throwaway materials, wild-living, and an attitude that was simultaneously counter-culture
rebellion but also entrepreneurial.
