 In the mid 1700's the City of Pompeii, destroyed by the volcanic eruption of
Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, was discovered. The excavation of the city by
archeologists fueled artists fascination and curiosity about the ancient art
techniques and they began to use this knowledge in their works, thus the
Neo-Classical age was born.
 Many Neo-Classical artists believed that Greek art was about as close to
perfection as you could get. In turn, Neo-Classical artists were obsessed
with making the surface of their work perfectly smooth. The goal was to
show no evidence of brush-strokes discernible to the naked eye.
NEOCLASSICAL ARTISTS
JACQUES-LOUIS DAVID (1748-1825)

ANTONIO CANOVA (1757-1822)

BERTEL THORVALDSEN (1789-1838)

ROMANTIC ARTISTS
JEAN LOUIS THEODORE GERICAULT (1791-1824)

THÉODORE ROUSSEAU

JEAN-BAPTISTE-CAMILLE COROT
The art of neoclassicism was characterized by its clear
form, sober colors, shallow space, and vigorous horizontals
and verticals that rendered the subject matter timeless. The
famous artist used different media technique to their
different artworks to understand the different style of arts
this are different term that used.
Painting is the process of applying paint to a surface using
tools.
Medium or media is the material and tools used to make a
work of art.
Technique is the method and procedure used with an art
medium.
Craftsmanship is the skill with which the media and
techniques are employed.
During the neoclassic period the artist used different process,
media, and technique in their works. In their technique it shows
that there is stressed drawing with lines, not color and no trace
of brushstroke. The media they use that are very visible are oil,
wood, and canvas this is used in their painting and drawings.
Usually the types of works they have been portraits and
landscape painting and shows in the process of painting,
sculpting and modelling.
Romanticism closely followed Neoclassicism in the late 1700s.
It emerged as a reaction to the neoclassic style which was too
formal and restrained for the artist's taste. The romanticists
believed in expressing feelings, emotions, and moods of all
kinds freely. They also believed in the innate goodness of
humans and reacted at the events happening around them such
as the horrors of war and the Industrial Revolution.
For the period of romanticism there are also different style that
makes the artist more famous in their work, during this period it
shows that the technique they use are unrestrained, rich color,
and visible brushstrokes. The media they used are oil, wood,
and canvas it is the same with neoclassic period. Most of their
works are landscape painting and portraits that reflects in
paintings, sculptures and architectures.
EVALUATING THE WORKS OF ART
OF ROMANTICISM AND
NEOCLASSICISM
Art forms of the Neoclassic Period were produced in the late
18th century. These artworks are influenced by Ancient Greece
and Ancient Rome. Some of the famous artists of the
Neoclassic Period are J.A.D. Ingres, Jacques-Louis David,
Robert Smirke, Robert Adam, Antonio Canova, Jean Antoine
Houdon, and Bertel Thorvaldsen. Neoclassic style is highly
visible in paintings, sculptures and architecture of the 18th
century.
Romanticism is highly contrasted with Neoclassicism. It is a
reaction to the classical, contemplative nature of neoclassical
pieces. It seeks modernism and expresses emotion through art.
Famous artists in this era were Jean Louis Théodore Gericault,
Eugène Delacroix, Francisco Goya, François Rude and Antoine-
Louis Barye. Landscape painting became more popular due to the
peoples’ romantic adoration of nature. Théodore Rousseau and
Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot led the Romantic landscape painting
in France.
