Element 9.1 - General
requirements

Upon completion of Elements 5 – 11, the learner will be able to do


a general risk assessment in their workplace - profiling and
prioritising risks, inspecting the workplace, recognising a range of
common hazards, evaluating risks (taking account of current
controls), recommending further control measures, planning
actions.
Explain what work equipment is and the general requirements for its safe
use.
Outline the requirements for conformity of machinery.
Explain the general requirements for the prevention of access to dangerous
parts of machinery.
Outline when the use and maintenance of equipment with specific risks
needs to be restricted.
Explain why equipment should be maintained and maintenance conducted
safely.
Explain the requirements for emergency operation controls, stability,
lighting, markings and warnings, clear workspace.
Element 9.2 - Hand held
tools

Upon completion of Elements 5 – 11, the learner will be able to do


a general risk assessment in their workplace - profiling and
prioritising risks, inspecting the workplace, recognising a range of
common hazards, evaluating risks (taking account of current
controls), recommending further control measures, planning
actions.
Outline the hazards from manual and powered hand-held tools including:
Requirements for safe use
Condition and fitness for use
Suitability for purpose
Location to be used in (including flammable atmosphere)
Explain the hazards of portable power tools and how these hazards are
controlled.

machinery

Explain the basic principles of operation, advantages and limitations of the

Outline the basic requirements for guards and safety devices.
