This document outlines the requirements for safe use of work equipment, machinery, and tools according to Elements 9.1 through 9.4 of the International General Certificate. It discusses general requirements for work equipment, conformity of machinery, prevention of access to dangerous parts, and maintenance. It also covers hazards and controls for handheld tools, common machinery hazards, and basic control methods for machinery including guards, protective devices, jigs, training, and personal protective equipment. The overall goal is for learners to be able to conduct general risk assessments by recognizing hazards, evaluating risks, and recommending controls.

Certificate Notebook Element 9 Element 9.1 - General requirements
Upon completion of Elements 5 – 11, the learner will be able to do
a general risk assessment in their workplace - profiling and prioritising risks, inspecting the workplace, recognising a range of common hazards, evaluating risks (taking account of current controls), recommending further control measures, planning actions. Explain what work equipment is and the general requirements for its safe use. Outline the requirements for conformity of machinery. Explain the general requirements for the prevention of access to dangerous parts of machinery. Outline when the use and maintenance of equipment with specific risks needs to be restricted. Explain why equipment should be maintained and maintenance conducted safely. Explain the requirements for emergency operation controls, stability, lighting, markings and warnings, clear workspace. Element 9.2 - Hand held tools
Upon completion of Elements 5 – 11, the learner will be able to do
a general risk assessment in their workplace - profiling and prioritising risks, inspecting the workplace, recognising a range of common hazards, evaluating risks (taking account of current controls), recommending further control measures, planning actions. Outline the hazards from manual and powered hand-held tools including: Requirements for safe use Condition and fitness for use Suitability for purpose Location to be used in (including flammable atmosphere) Explain the hazards of portable power tools and how these hazards are controlled. Element 9.3 - Machinery hazards
Upon completion of Elements 5 – 11, the learner will be able to do
a general risk assessment in their workplace - profiling and prioritising risks, inspecting the workplace, recognising a range of common hazards, evaluating risks (taking account of current controls), recommending further control measures, planning actions. Outline potential consequences as a result of contact with, or exposure to, mechanical or other hazards. Detail the hazards of a range of equipment. Manufacturing/maintenance machinery Retail machinery Construction machinery Emerging technologies Element 9.4 - Control measures for machinery Upon completion of Elements 5 – 11, the learner will be able to do a general risk assessment in their workplace - profiling and prioritising risks, inspecting the workplace, recognising a range of common hazards, evaluating risks (taking account of current controls), recommending further control measures, planning actions. Explain the basic principles of operation, advantages and limitations of the following control methods: Guards Protective devices Jigs Information, instruction, training and supervision Personal protective equipment Outline the basic requirements for guards and safety devices.
