Time allowed: 90 min Max. Marks: 35

Q. 1 Write about coupled electrochemical reaction for aqueous corrosion iron in the light 5
of anodic and cathodic reactions and surface defects, in both acidic and basic
environment.

Q. 2 Describe models of electrical double layer developed between the solid/liquid 5

interfaces in corrosive environment.

Q. 3 Describe nature of oxide layer develop upon metal surface on exposure to high 5
temperature and its effect on corrosion rate.

Q. 4 Two half-cells are couple to form an electrochemical cell. Zn 2+(aq) + 2e− → Zn(s) 5
Eo= − 0.762V and Cu2+(aq) + 2e– → Cu(s) Eo= +0.342V. Identify anode and
cathode in this Electrochemical cell

Q. 5 Plain carbon steel immersed in seawater has a uniform corrosion rate expressed as a 5
penetration rate of 5.0 mpy (mils per year, where 1 mil = 0.001 in.). The density of
iron is 7.87 g/cm3. The atomic weight of Fe is 55.8 g/mol. Calculate a) the weight loss
after 5 years. b) the corresponding corrosion current density in microamperes per
square centimeter assuming that the corrosion current is given by Fe → Fe 2++ 2e-

Q. 6 An electrode potential was measured to be −0.500 V vs. Cu/CuSO 4. What is this 5

electrode potential on the SCE scale?
Given that E vs.SCE= E vs.SHE− 0.242 and E vs.Cu/CuSO4 = E vs.SHE − 0.316

Q. 7 Calculate whether copper can corrode at 25 ◦C in an acid solution of pH 2.0 to 5

produce a solution containing 0.10 M Cu 2+ ions and 0.5 atm hydrogen gas. Given that
𝐸o 𝐶𝑢+2/𝐶𝑢 = +0.342 V
