Attributes of God series

Who Does God Say That He Is?

Misconceptions about God abound. But they don't have to. God has revealed His
character in Scripture, illuminating the attributes that define Him. While we,
being finite creatures, can never truly comprehend everything that God is, we
should study what He Himself has said.
Steven Lawson articulates a biblical understanding of divine attributes and
explores how a right understanding of God can affect every aspect of our lives.
SOVEREIGNTY OF GOD
Worthwhile relationships are based on knowledge. When we meet someone for
the first time, we do not consider that we really know that person until we
have the opportunity to learn more about that person, such as his or her
history, personality, likes, dislikes, and desires. As we come to know more
about a new acquaintance, we better understand how to carry on a relationship
with that person. In the same way, a vibrant relationship with the triune God
must be rooted in a firm understanding of who He reveals Himself to be in His
Word. In this message, Dr. Steven J. Lawson presents an overview of God's
defining attributes and invites us to pursue a more intimate and worshipful
relationship with Him.
Psalm 103,
19
The Lord has established his throne in the heavens,
    and his kingdom rules over all.
Psalm 47, God’s Rule over the Nations

Clap your hands, all you people; shout to God with loud songs of joy.

For the Lord, the Most-High, is awesome, a great king over all the earth.

He subdued peoples under us, and nations under our feet.

He chose our heritage for us, the pride of Jacob whom he loves.

God has gone up with a shout, the Lord with the sound of a trumpet.

Sing praises to God, sing praises; sing praises to our King, sing praises.

For God is the king of all the earth; sing praises with a psalm.

God is king over the nations; God sits on his holy throne.

The princes of the peoples gather as the people of the God of Abraham.
For the shields of the earth belong to God; he is highly exalted.
Psalm 45,

Our God is in the heavens; he does whatever he pleases.
Psalms 90, God’s Eternity and Human Frailty.
A Prayer of Moses, the man of God.

Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations.

Before the mountains were brought forth,
    or ever you had formed the earth and the world,
    from everlasting to everlasting you are God.

You turn us back to dust, and say, “Turn back, you mortals.”

For a thousand years in your sight are like yesterday when it is past,
    or like a watch in the night.
Psalm 93, The Majesty of God’s Rule

The Lord is king, he is robed in majesty;
    the Lord is robed, he is girded with strength.
He has established the world; it shall never be moved;

    your throne is established from of old;
    you are from everlasting.
Psalm 29, The Voice of God in a Great Storm

Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings,
    ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.

Ascribe to the Lord the glory of his name;
    worship the Lord in holy splendor.

The voice of the Lord is over the waters;
    the God of glory thunders,
    the Lord, over mighty waters.

The voice of the Lord is powerful;
    the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.

The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;
    the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon.

He makes Lebanon skip like a calf,
    and Sirion like a young wild ox.

The voice of the Lord flashes forth flames of fire.

The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness;
    the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.

The voice of the Lord causes the oaks to whirl,
    and strips the forest bare; and in his temple all say, “Glory!”
10
The Lord sits enthroned over the flood;
    the Lord sits enthroned as king forever.
11
May the Lord give strength to his people!
    May the Lord bless his people with peace!
Psalm 121, Assurance of God’s Protection

I lift up my eyes to the hills—from where will my help come?

My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber.

He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

The Lord is your keeper;
    the Lord is your shade at your right hand.

The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night.

The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life.

The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in
    from this time on and forevermore.
Ephesians 1, Spiritual Blessings in Christ

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in
Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places,

 4 just as he chose us in Christ  before the foundation of the world to

be holy and blameless before him in love.
 5 He destined us for adoption as his children through Jesus Christ, according to
the good pleasure of his will,
 6 to the praise of his glorious grace that he freely bestowed on us in the
Beloved.
 7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our
trespasses, according to the riches of his grace
 8 that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and insight
 9 he has made known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good
pleasure that he set forth in Christ,
 10 as a plan for the fullness of time, to gather up all things in him, things in
heaven and things on earth.

 11 In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance,   having been

destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all
things according to his counsel and will,
 12 so that we, who were the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the
praise of his glory.
 13 In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your
salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised
Holy Spirit;
 14 this is the pledge of our inheritance toward redemption as God’s own people,
to the praise of his glory.
Romans 8,
28
We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who
are called according to his purpose.
Matthew 10,
29
Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the
ground apart from your Father.
 30 And even the hairs of your head are all counted.
 31 So do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows.
Colossians 1, The Supremacy of Christ
15
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation;
 16 for in him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and
invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers—all things have
been created through him and for him.
 17 He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
 18 He is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn
from the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything.
 19 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell,
 20 and through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether
on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross.
Isaiah 45,
1
Thus says the Lord to his anointed, to Cyrus,
    whose right hand I have grasped
to subdue nations before him
    and strip kings of their robes,
to open doors before him—
    and the gates shall not be closed:

I will go before you
    and level the mountains,
I will break in pieces the doors of bronze
    and cut through the bars of iron,

I will give you the treasures of darkness
    and riches hidden in secret places,
so that you may know that it is I, the Lord,
    the God of Israel, who call you by your name.

For the sake of my servant Jacob,
    and Israel my chosen,
I call you by your name,
    I surname you, though you do not know me.

I am the Lord, and there is no other;
    besides me there is no god.
    I arm you, though you do not know me,

so that they may know, from the rising of the sun
    and from the west, that there is no one besides me;
    I am the Lord, and there is no other.

I form light and create darkness,
    I make weal and create woe;
    I the Lord do all these things.
Proverbs 16,
33
The lot is cast into the lap, but the decision is the Lord’s alone.
Job 42, Job Is Humbled and Satisfied
1
 Then Job answered the Lord:

“I know that you can do all things,
    and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted.
Lamentations 3,
37
Who can command and have it done,
    if the Lord has not ordained it?
38
Is it not from the mouth of the Most High
    that good and bad come?
39
Why should any who draw breath complain
    about the punishment of their sins?
Acts 4,
27
For in this city, in fact, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and
the peoples of Israel, gathered together against your holy servant Jesus, whom
you anointed,
 28 to do whatever your hand and your plan had predestined to take place.
Exercise of the sovereign of God:
 God sovereignty in creation.
Psalm 33,
10
The Lord brings the counsel of the nations to nothing;
    he frustrates the plans of the peoples.
11
The counsel of the Lord stands forever,
    the thoughts of his heart to all generations.
12
Happy is the nation whose God is the Lord,
    the people whom he has chosen as his heritage.
 History and providence.

 Salvation.
