If you feel disappointed with your spiritual life, it may be because you’re not relying on the Holy Spirit.
Dr. Stanley explores the essential role that the third person of the Trinity plays in each believer’s life.
KEY PASSAGE:
John 14, The Promise of the Holy Spirit
15
“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.
16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever.
17 This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him.
You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you.
18
“I will not leave you orphaned; I am coming to you.
19 In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me; because I live, you also will live.
20 On that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.
21 They who have my commandments and keep them are those who love me; and those who love me will
be loved by my Father, and I will love them and reveal myself to them.”
22 Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it that you will reveal yourself to us, and not to the
world?”
23 Jesus answered him, “Those who love me will keep my word, and my Father will love them, and we
will come to them and make our home with them.
24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words; and the word that you hear is not mine, but is from
the Father who sent me.
25
“I have said these things to you while I am still with you.
26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything,
and remind you of all that I have said to you.
27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your
hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.
28 You heard me say to you, ‘I am going away, and I am coming to you.’ If you loved me, you would
rejoice that I am going to the Father, because the Father is greater than I.
29 And now I have told you this before it occurs, so that when it does occur, you may believe.
30 I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no power over me;
31 but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let
us be on our way.
SUPPORTING SCRIPTURE:
Luke 24, Jesus Appears to His Disciples
36
While they were talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with
you.”
37 They were startled and terrified, and thought that they were seeing a ghost.
38 He said to them, “Why are you frightened, and why do doubts arise in your hearts?
39 Look at my hands and my feet; see that it is I myself. Touch me and see; for a ghost does not have flesh
and bones as you see that I have.”
40 And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.
41 While in their joy they were disbelieving and still wondering, he said to them, “Have you anything here
to eat?”
42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish,
43 and he took it and ate in their presence.
Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you—that
44
everything written about me in the law of Moses, the prophets, and the psalms must be fulfilled.”
45 Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures,
46 and he said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Messiah is to suffer and to rise from the dead on the
third day,
47 and that repentance and forgiveness of sins is to be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning
from Jerusalem.
48 You are witnesses of these things.
49 And see, I am sending upon you what my Father promised; so stay here in the city until you have been
clothed with power from on high.”
The Ascension of Jesus
50
Then he led them out as far as Bethany, and, lifting up his hands, he blessed them.
51 While he was blessing them, he withdrew from them and was carried up into heaven.
52 And they worshiped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy;
53 and they were continually in the temple blessing God.
John 16, The Work of the Spirit
“I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you.
5 But now I am going to him who sent me; yet none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’
6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts.
7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the
Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.
8 And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong about[b] sin and righteousness and judgment:
9 about sin, because they do not believe in me;
10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will see me no longer;
11 about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been condemned.
12
“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.
13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own,
but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.
14 He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you.
15 All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to
you.
Acts 1, The Promise of the Holy Spirit
1
In the first book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus did and taught from the beginning
2 until the day when he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the
apostles whom he had chosen.
3 After his suffering he presented himself alive to them by many convincing proofs, appearing to them
during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.
4 While staying with them, he ordered them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for the promise of
the Father. “This,” he said, “is what you have heard from me;
5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
The Ascension of Jesus
6
So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, is this the time when you will restore the
kingdom to Israel?”
7 He replied, “It is not for you to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority.
8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in
Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
9 When he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight.
10 While he was going and they were gazing up toward heaven, suddenly two men in white robes stood by
them.
11 They said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up toward heaven? This Jesus, who has been
taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”
Acts 7, The Stoning of Stephen
54
When they heard these things, they became enraged and ground their teeth at Stephen.
55 But filled with the Holy Spirit, he gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the
right hand of God.
56 “Look,” he said, “I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!”
57 But they covered their ears, and with a loud shout all rushed together against him.
58 Then they dragged him out of the city and began to stone him; and the witnesses laid their coats at the
feet of a young man named Saul.
59 While they were stoning Stephen, he prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”
60 Then he knelt down and cried out in a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” When he
had said this, he died.
Romans 8, Life in the Spirit
1
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
2 For the law of the Spirit[a] of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.
3 For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do: by sending his own Son in the
likeness of sinful flesh, and to deal with sin, he condemned sin in the flesh,
4 so that the just requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but
according to the Spirit.
5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live
according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.
6 To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.
7 For this reason the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law—
indeed it cannot,
8 and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
But you are not in the flesh; you are in the Spirit, since the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does
9
13 for if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the
body, you will live.
14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.
15 For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of
adoption. When we cry, “Abba! Father!”
16 it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God,
17 and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ—if, in fact, we suffer with him so
that we may also be glorified with him.
1 Corinthians 2, The True Wisdom of God
6
Yet among the mature we do speak wisdom, though it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this
age, who are doomed to perish.
7 But we speak God’s wisdom, secret and hidden, which God decreed before the ages for our glory.
8 None of the rulers of this age understood this; for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of
glory.
9 But, as it is written,
“What no eye has seen, nor ear heard,
nor the human heart conceived,
what God has prepared for those who love him”—
10
these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches everything, even the
depths of God.
11 For what human being knows what is truly human except the human spirit that is within? So also no
one comprehends what is truly God’s except the Spirit of God.
12
Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit that is from God, so that we may
understand the gifts bestowed on us by God.
13 And we speak of these things in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit,
interpreting spiritual things to those who are spiritual.
Those who are unspiritual do not receive the gifts of God’s Spirit, for they are foolishness to them, and
14
they are unable to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.
15 Those who are spiritual discern all things, and they are themselves subject to no one else’s scrutiny.
“For who has known the mind of the Lord
16
he vencido al mundo.
Hechos 1, Introducción
1
cual, les dijo, oísteis de mí;
6
a Israel?
propia autoridad;
diestra de Dios;
Habiendo dicho
esto, durmió.
1 Corinthians 12, Los dones espirituales
1
mismo Espíritu;
9 a otro, fe por el mismo Espíritu; a otro, dones de sanidad por el único Espíritu;
