My name is Shuang Liang. I am a 20 years old Asian girl. I was born and raised in a

Southwest city of China, named Chengdu. Most of you might never heard the city. Chengdu is a

new first-tier city which also ranked top 5 city of China. That’s a modern city. But I don’t think I

grow up in a multicultural circumstance. Most of my friends and classmates from this city, we

speak with the same accent, we like eating spicy food (Spicy food is a major feature of Chengdu

cuisine), etc. In short, I lived in this closed environment for 18 years. Never made a friend from

another country, even just a few friends come from other provinces in China. Because of this

curiosity about the outside world, I decided to come to the United States alone and started my

study abroad life.

About my family, I am the only kid of my family. In the traditional Chinese family,

children are raised by their grandparents, the reason is that parents have to devoted into their

work and earn enough money to make a family living, I was no exception. What I have to

mention is I got more care and company from my grandparents. As traditional Chinese, my

grandparents are frugal. However, they are willing to spend a lot of money to satisfy any of my

wishes. In my memory, my grandfather always comes to school on time to pick me up. My

grandmother always prepared different delicious food before I back home. They love me in the

most traditional Chinese way. Simple but sincere. About my parents, they divorced when I was 4

years old, my father got custody of me, so I do not have many memories about my mother. My

father didn’t graduate from college just high school, but he once competed with 3000 college
graduates for a job, and finally got the chance to work in the China Railway Administration.

Although I lost my mother's love, my father gave me double love. He said he didn't want me to

live the most traditional and simple Chinese life like him. The world is diversity. He hopes that I

will not be limited by my current life. I deserve a better life. I am still young and should go all

over the world to explore. And he was willing to be the one who offered me the opportunity and

always supported me. Although my family didn’t be educated on multicultural, they definitely

know culture is diverse and how important it is. They wish me could be exposed to

multicultural. Therefore, when I was very young, they hoped that I could study and live abroad

through my hard-working.

So, I got the opportunity. After I graduated from high school in 2019, came to Las Vegas

alone then started my study life in America. I spend one year for learning language at UNLV. I

finally have the chance exposed to multicultural education. I made friends from different

countries and cultural background. I realized ethnicity, nationality, religion can be so diverse! It

would be hard to exposed to the multicultural if I stay in China in my lifetime. This is just the

beginning of my multicultural education. I am the first generation in my family who educated on

multicultural education. I hope I can set a good example for my future children and provide them

with better education opportunities, just like my family efforts for me.
