Directions: Use the Week 3: CRAAPO Test to evaluate your popular source, and then answer the questions below based
on your evaluation. For help with this assignment, be sure to review the Week 3: Model Assignment. Save the completed
template on your computer with a new file name and upload it to Waypoint for grading. Reminder: Do not upload the
CRAAPO Test to Waypoint for grading.
1. Provide an APA-formatted reference for your popular source.
Basdeo, S. (2021, September 03). Rogues, whores, and highwaymen: The history of crime literature.
Retrieved June 13, 2022, from https://reynolds-news.com/2021/09/03/history-crime-literature/
2. Describe to what extent your popular article met each element of the CRAAPO test. Your description of each
element should be at least 2 to 3 sentences.
Currency –The Article was published in 2021, approximately nine months ago. The information is relevant to
the topic dealing specifically with roguery and the history of rogue literature, even highlighting notable
works.
Relevance – The information answers the question of "What are the origins of Rogue literature?" and
examines specific examples of the genre and how they evolved. The writing is not too simple nor too
advanced for my needs. The article's intent is for the general public who shares an interest in the topic of
Rogues Literature.
Authority – The author is Stephen Basdeo. The author is described as a historian and writer with a Masters in
History, currently pursuing a PhD with interest and several academic writings in the rogue works of Robin
Hood. Contact information was not expressively written on the article, but the URL is for a personal type
blog.
Accuracy – The article used many citations in a section of the page of mainly books, journals and articles
associated with the topic. The language and tone seem unbiased in their accounting, with few to no spelling
errors. It is unclear whether outsiders have reviewed the post since it is a personal blog-type site; however,
many sources represent peer-reviewed items.
Purpose – The role of the information in this article serves to inform audiences of the aspects of roguery in
literature and early English culture surrounding these works. The author does not explicitly make their
intentions clear beyond expounding on our understanding of roguery in literature from medieval to modern
times, as stated in the introduction.
Objectivity – The point of view of the article is objective and impartial. It heavily relies on facts, however, as
literary works require some aspects of interpreting the facts supported in this article by reputable and
unbiased sources.
3. Discuss the overall strength of your popular article as an appropriate source for your Wikipedia stub article
subtopics. Include specific details from your popular article to support your points. Tip: Your response should be at
least 5 sentences.
The article selected is an appropriate source for gathering information for the "Rogue Literature" Wikipedia
article. The subtopic supported by this article related to the genre's evolution within to modern times as the
article highlights key aspects from the medieval times to the 1900s. The article does demonstrate some
weaknesses, mainly related to the nature of the website and whether stated credentials can be solely
trusted as blog sites are seldom vetted. However, since the site has no links associated with profit-making or
pay-per-click adverts, it is clear that content is purely for information and not swayed by advertisers. The
author does seem quite knowledgeable on the subject matter, and a follow-up on his works direct to several
academic pieces associated with the subject of rogue literature as several published works are linked on the
website. Overall I believe that the article is well suited to chronicling the genre's evolution.
4. Explain why it is important to evaluate sources of information. Tip: Your response should be at least 5 sentences.
Because we are constantly bombarded with information in our daily lives, it is crucial to be able to critically
evaluate whether the information is reliable and, in the case of academic work, provides appropriate
information based on your needs. When we can critically assess information based on tools such as the
CRAAPO Test, we can better recognise outdated, misleading, inaccurate and even biased sources.

5. Assess if your reading strategy changed as you read the popular article as opposed to the scholarly article. Why is it
important to adjust reading strategies? Tip: Your response should be at least 5 sentences.
Because the scholarly article was more structured in its approach to presenting information, the reading
strategy for gathering information about the article's relevance was a quick process of applying the SQ3R
method, beginning with surveying the Abstract and Conclusion, which would encourage or deter further
examination. However, in our popular piece, such structure is not explicitly stated, so another approach
needed to be adopted. Reading the introduction was crucial in establishing what the article was about,
followed by examining the headings and subheadings of the document to see whether they were relevant to
subtopic questions. It is essential to read text underling them or highlighting key concepts and information
that serve to answer the questions posed.
The strategies must adjust to reflect the varied nature of the two sources, which often contrast as scholarly
sources are more formally structured. At the same time, the Popular Sources are easier to read but less rigid
in their presentation of information, requiring more in-depth reading before one can determine relevance
or irrelevance to the specific question at hand.
