Topic 5 Internship Reflection

Relationship with Principal Mentor

I have built a productive rapport with my mentor during these five weeks by

collaborating with her, taking advice on leadership dos and don’ts, and taking on individual tasks

that align with the role of a school leader. Also, I have taken time to build a connection with key

administration individuals including the assistant leader and administrative secretary to

understand how they communicate and what their roles are to support each other.

Significant Leadership Experience

One memorable leadership experience that occurred recently was being offered the social

media and webmaster position for the upcoming school year. The role and responsibilities that

align with the position include updating our outlets to provide information, announce events,

share images and videos of activities, and communicate with parents and families. My first task

in this role was to develop the school’s Facebook page with information on the site, enhance the

page visuals, and announce our page to parents in ClassDojo. During the first weeks in my role, I

gained experience communicating with parents that had questions on enrollment, school

supplies, and information for meet the teacher night. As a future athletic director, this experience

helped me comprehend the importance of using digital outlets to build school rapport, gain

support from the community, and increase communication with families. This leadership strategy

will also keep communities engaged and committed to supporting their children’s education

outside of school.

Connection to ELCC Standards

This experience gave me essential expertise that focuses on developing outlets to build

community rapport and communication. As well, it gave me leadership insight on how to

communicate with families and ensure their needs and concerns are addressed adequately. This

practice aligns with the Educational Leadership Constituent Council (ELCC) standards as it is

noted in standard 4.3 where “Candidates understand and can respond to community interests and

needs by building and sustaining positive school relationships with families and caregivers”

(National Policy Board for Educational Administration, 2011). By engaging in this experience, I

gained expertise that will help develop my own resources to communicate with parents and

advocate our vision and mission to the communities.

Focus and Application

The area of leadership I will focus on for my next reflection is revising and modifying the

master schedule. The purpose of this task from a leader’s perspective is to ensure that faculty and

staff are receiving the adequate number of prep periods, lunchtime, and opportunities to meet

with their grade teams to collaborate. Furthermore, I will review the related arts schedule to

verify that students have all related arts classes throughout the week for an all-around

educational experience.
