Like his good friend (and Smut Ped- dlertave scribe) Ron Haydock, Jim was originally from the mid- west-- he was born April 21, 1933 in Mount Carmel, llinois, near St, Louis. He grew up a voracious reader and movie goer, and began writing sci- ence fiction and adventure stories asa teenager. His ear- liest published short stories werein Science Fiction Quar- terly and Smashing Detec- tive, and then he moved on to It and Galaxy magazines. Al- though he had written science fiction novels, and wanted to write SF exclusively, he could not finda publisher for his work. In 1960, Jim wrote to science fiction kingpin Forry Acker MEET THE SLEAZE KINGS Pt. 2: Jim Harmon man for advice on how to get into the novel writing business, and Forty in turn suggested that Jim move outto California, a tip which Jim promptly fol- lowed through on. Forry sent Jim to Parliament Publications, Where he was to become a staff writer of not science fic~ tion, but, you guessed it~ sleaze. Jim took on the job to pay the rent while he worked on his science fiction material, and managed to slip in a good amount of SF into the sleaze plots. The wonderful Epic line of adult paperbacks was Par- liament’s big new baby, and Jim's first novels, Vixen AND| SUDDEN LUST! ae fou bn i sivas Hollow, The Man Who Made Maniacs, and Celluloid Scandal were all issued in 1961. Coincidentally, Ron Haydock had moved out to California sooh after Jim, and had been working with Forry ‘Ackermann on Famous Mon- ‘sters. Jim, who had moved to L.A.at Forry’s suggestion, had also beenwriting for FM. When: he and Ron met, they became immediate friends, both being Illinois transplants, both being movie and sci-fifanatics. When in early 1961 Ron had com- plained to Jim about having a hard time making ends meet, Jim persuaded Ron to get into sleaze writing. The novels that each wrote during their mutual careers at Epic, France, Nite- time, and PEC were filled with injokesandreferencestoeach other. Most of Jim's output is credited to his real name, how- ever, collaborations were not. Generally, the Judson Grey pseudonym meant a Harmon- Haydock collaboration, while Jim Harvey and J.H. Wilkins meanta Harmon zollaboration with Will Kuhn, Jim estimates that his total sleaze novel out- put numbered between thirty and thirty five titles, with the career lasting three years from 1961 to 1964. He did have one last novel published by Green- leaf Classics five years later, in 1969. By that time, Jim had written The Great Radio He- roes, an in-depth history of radio dramas, and continues gts STRIP to write about old time radio, movies, and science fiction. Cult film fans should note that Jim appears in Ray Dennis ‘Steckler's LemonGrove Kids Meet the Monsters-- he's the ‘Spanky- type kid in the gang. Inthe early 60's, Jimalsowrote several movie scripts for Jack H. Harris, producer of The Blob and Dinosaurus, but the Scripts never made it tofilm. In the early seventies he edited Monsters. of the Movies, which featured several great monster movie research ar- ticles by Ron Haydock. Check out Jim's humor-injected adult stuff. Its a gas! My own interest in low budget postwar publishing compa- nies came in stumblingacros a copy of hardcover ed of BACKSTAGE TEMPT- RESS by hizzoner Joe Weiss. Joc had by then become one ofmy personal JD paperback Top Ten via his stellar Bea- con effort GANG GIRL. I had spoken with JW on the, phone and he had been just as sleazy as you'd want him to be. (Does anybody out there have a videotape of Joe Weiss on the Joe Franklin Show? Somebody say YUP!!!) Also, he was a lifetime Brooklyn resident, and tome, the City Across the River is, andalways will be, the real & true Gaddadavida. So, any- way, Herr Weiss already had anumber of tuffpointsin his favor by the time I came across BACKSTAGE TTEMPTRESS. The discov- ery of _ that one lone hardcover opened up a new world that co-exists gor- geously with paperbacks of the same era. Bizarrely, most paperback mavensare oblivi- ous to hardcovers, and it's weird and kinda LOUSY of some so-called experts to refer to oh-so-many carly indie editions as PBO (Pa- perback Only) when there were c¢qually luscious hardcover editions issued by small hardcover houscs. Per- haps these scholars, in their constant search for more reasonstosnear, sniff& snub, have erroneously deemed many postwar non-majors as vanity houses-- and bye the bye, what the heck's so lo- class about vanity presses? They're the BEST! I think ALL writers should have to PAY the PUBLISHERS-- maybe even PAY THE READERS-- to get their gunk read! Maybe that would inject a little humility into crummyidiots who think the world owes THEM because they know how to type fast & use a dictionary! IfI meet one more nitwit going to college to become a great writer, I'm gonna wonk 'em on the skull with the cight- cen pound family Bible Mom just passed down to me, I suppose because she figgered I needed ig (and its super scarey dragon engravings)the most. Maybe a whack upside the head with the ultimate ghost-writers' nightmare would send 'em groveling back to Herschell Gordon Lewis's On The Art Of Writing Copy, the only manualofstyle anybody with an SRA education needs to own-- ever-- and that only because of the guaranteed double whammy flashbacks Teftz two regular Joes-- Weiss and Franklin discuss nostalgia value of GANG GIRL. from Blood Feast and Gore Gore Girls that'll slam up alongside the Five Great Motivators. So anyway, small press hardcovers have fallen between the cracks into limbo. Hardcover collectors don't want 'cm, and paper- back collectors pretty much pretend theydon'texist. Hey, it's everybody's loss. My guess is that just as with the paperback world (where it took big wig dealers forever to recognize the coolness of pb digests, JD books, and adult stuff), the realization thatindic hardcovers possess. excess finesse will eventually come to the presumptuous price guide popes, whose tastemaking talents leave more than a few gasping for oxygen & groping for bludg- cons. Now that we've suc- cessfully flogged any doubt- ers within reach of the trusty crop, let us safely return to a congenial fireside chat about early massmarket adult read- ing in hardcover. Hands-down king o! the heap in world of the hard bound hootenanny was Jack Woodford, "the American Rabelais", as he called him- self. Woodford was born in 1894 in Chicago, where he was educated in public schools, and where he grew into a writing career at Northwestern University in Evanston. His first workasa writer was as a newspaper reporterin Chicago, Detroit, New York and Richmond, Virginia, but Woodford made his name as a sooth sayer, not a truth teller-- every day fiction was his chosen craft. To call Jack Woodford prolific would be a gross understatement-- in his lifetime, the man wrote many hundreds of short sto- ries and many dozens of books-- and he not only wrote them, but also pub- lished them, marketedthem, and promoted the living daylights out ofhimself, too. Tracking Woodford through his works is dizzying, and thisinitial forayissimply that. I've barely scratched the surface and hope one day to get the shebang into sharper focus, for now, call this a basic primer to the naughty pen of Jack Woodford, perhapsthe original Chicago smut scribe. So then, we have JW working as a newspaper reporter during Prohibition insleazey, boozey, mob-run Chi-town. But our hero was a news hound with literary aspirations, a bohemian in- spiration, and a mad flapper mentality. The first quarter of the twentieth century spawned a new, wild breed of free thinker, of which Woodford was most defi- nitely part and parcel. Al- thoughhisultimate audience was to be the quintessentia- lest (sorry, language masters) of common man (more vo- yeur than docr) his immedi- ately post-market crash novel assaults, like the privately printed 1931 hunk of low- brow exotica, entitled, most excellently, WHITE MEAT, was sold inalimited printing of 1,000 to the erotica cus- tomersofPanurge Press (who also produced a volume about the history of circum- cision, flagellation, hermaph- roditism, and other sexual Jack Woodford. in 1946 off-themes). The title WHITE MEAT might have been acceptible to a private, crotica-stoked audience, but Woodford knew that those two little words, innocuous as they were apart, would together be seized upon by zealot censors when the book was issued, as it was, to the general public. Indeed, when Woodford progressed to establishing his own publish- ing company in the 1940's, the luscious WHITE MEAT became WHITE HEAT (Jack Woodford Press-- henceforth "JWP" 1946). In a nutshell, Woodford's nov- els have appeared in three _distinct formats /editions in at least three subsequent decades. Dig; in the 1930's, Woodford appeared in hardcover for private and public publishers like God- win. When Arco exited from the picture as a hard cover com- pany, Woodfordimmediately established the fabulous Sig- nature Pressin Baltimore. An carly Signature edition re- veals that the company was formed with Woodford as a principal owner, and stated that the goal ofthe company was to publish and promote books written by Woodford and by "young writerswhom. he personally trained in the Woodford style". Jake Woodford appears to have given Joe his first break as a novelist. Joc, like Jack Woodford, wrote like fiend, However, Joecame onto the scene a good twenty years after Jack, and so by the time he had gotten up to speed, the sleaze novel genre hadin "my opinion) peaked and was ready to tumble into decline. Many of his novels include this dedication: "To the memory of EMILE ZOLA-- who was the great innovator of the original school of NATURALISM, in general, and the direct and burning inspiration whichled tothe modern school of JOE. WEISS-- of THREE DI- MENSIONAL NATURAL- ISM, in particular." THE LION'S DEN is dedicated to: "JOE WEISS-- for the burning inspiration and in- centive that his great novels have given me. This is with particular reference to his magnificent LADIES! MAN..." Inshort, Joc Weiss had a lot of self confidence. He was one guy who could get away with telling a dame he was an "author". I spoke with Joc Weiss once on the telephone and got nervous when he said he'd pick me up inhis car. By this time he was submitting stuff to SCREW magazine and I felt genu- incly suspicious about get- ting "picked up" by a bona fide smut scribe. Well, like the Richard Berry song gocs, "Ain't gonna be no next time". Sure enough, when I'd finally gotten a grip on myself and decided to re- contact Joc, he had vanished. Needless to say, I've kicked myself many times. So any- way, Joe must have had something going with Key- Elite-Toga, as it's apparent thathe wrote virtually every- SELECTED ADULT HARDCOVERS Key: ? - Joe Weiss pseudonym, in all probability + - Year not listed, this is probable year Listing Author, title (publisher, year) First HB editions, unless © listed Alexander, George STRANGE OBSESSION (Macau- lay, 1959) ‘Ath, Max THE WICKED & THE WARPED (JWP) ‘Ames, H.B. In many ways, it overpowers scanty panty American gunk-- there'slotsabare bosoms, sin- ister graphics, loads of inuen- dos.anda generally glaringab- sence of frolicksome ribaldry. Its intense, creepy, shame- studded wampum. All of this stuffisearly enough to predate any hard core live action mule monger Tijuana Bible type nonsense, sorawbeefhodads, don't get worked into a lather. I've peppered in a few later things thatmay be of interestto special tastes (Jess Franco fans, take note), but on the most part, this gunkis all 1940- 50's vintage Mex sleaze. Mexi- canlobby cards are largerthan their US counterparts. They measure approximately 12 x 17, although sizes vary aninch here and there, andare printed on pulpy window card-type stock-- in fact, their size and substance are easiest de- soribed as horizontal window cards. Most are in full color, some are beautiful duo or colorjobs. Of course, all textis in Spanish. These are all origi- nals. Prices based on condi- tion & vintage. Ifyou absolutely don't care about condition and just want some to paper your ‘outhouse or lawnmower shed, let me know and Ill rustie up some unrateables for abuck or 2a pop. That unbearable creature was Jean Moorehead,a gal better known inpin-up mags for smiling vivaciousness rather than nasty antics!Jean was a B- movie princess before herrole in THE VIOLENT YEARS. She was the ham hocked hot pants temptress in MOTORCYCLE GANGand the nervy beatuty in FRENCH LINE, too. By age 19, Jean had graced more than thirty magazine covers. Decor Smut Peddler headquarters in- cludes a Jean as a 1958 calendar cowgirl, decked out in western finery and posing with the cut- est pinto pony. Miss Moore- head, like Betty Page, was aij native of Tennessee. Wonder where she is today? Anybody; seen asixty year old fireball trash 4 ing any elementary schools lately? @p Joan is 5'5", 119 pounds ond has a 36-2434 Sager. BEAUTY King Kong may be the top of the heap when itcomes to big apes fall- ingin love with ity bitty blondes, but our well-endowed early adult nov- els provide gnarly, snarly peeks into the taboo antics of amorous apes mixing it up with mister & missus homo erectus in the hoary creosote etherworld of Monkey's Uncledom, where beastly antics certainly abound, but again, in the nicest way. This is Darwinism at its most rambunctious. Witness this from our lord and master Vin Saxon a/k/a Lonnie Lord a/k/a Ron Haydock, from his mind boggling hardbolled monster APE RAPE (in which the ape is named Kaanga-- see an- ‘otherpb by sametite!)a/waCAGED LUST (inwhich monkey-poo's moni- ker is Banga); "Kaanga grabbed her by the shoulders and she slumped half hysterical into his, mammouth hairy arms. Witha grunt of rage, Kanga ripped away her clothes, shredding them. He threw her mercilessly down on the floor and dropped onto hor. He roared out his brutality, his savagery, hi agony. Lila Gibson shuddered compulsively, dreadfully obscene murmurings pouring over her lips as she stared entranced at Kaanga and the whimpering prostitute, Al- etta. She trembled hysterically, eyes ‘widening with strange, lurid fasci- nation. Then something happened to her and she started hissing and panting and shrieking hysterically. She ranted and raved on the brink of insanity. Her hellish shrieks inter- mingled with the barbaric grunts bursting from Kaanga's great throat as he attacked the woman laying prone beneath him.” Okay, it may not be one of the tenderestlove scenes ever written, but jeepers, You Get The Picture without the slightest smidgen of anatomical descriptive. Certainly hysteria has her day in Haydock’s bizarre world! The closing chapter of the novel has the neroine going canine after the death of Kaanga, but there, | spoiled it now forall you plothungry orangutangs out there! ‘Check out this batch of luscious monkeyshines.
