SUBJECT: LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT DEVELOPMENT COURSE

INSTRUCTOR: PLTCOL DAVID JOY DUARTE

TOPIC: DISILLUSIONED LEARNER (D2)

Jayson entered Business Process Outsourcing as new call center agent in
Asimmawa Company. After a month, he has acquired competence conversing and
addressing concerns of the clients through telephone calls. However, he hasn’t made as
much progress as expected. Because of this, his commitment dropped. He felt that his
efforts and progress are not being acknowledged. He became frustrated and eventually
submitted his resignation letter because of consistently not closing deals with clients.

As a situational leader, we must recognize that Jayson has a low to some

competence and low commitment. Accordingly, we must invoke a coaching leadership
style which require a high directive high supportive behavior to Jayson who is a
disillusioned learner. We must continue to direct goal or task accomplishment but we must
also explain why we should solicit suggestions from Jayson, and begin to encourage his
involvement in decision making. But still, we are the one to decide.

Once a person has lost commitment, providing direction is not enough, we need also
have to provide support and encouragement. We should not belittle them, ignore or avoid
conversation with them. We must recognize that they need your direction and support to
help them move forward. Me may revisit the goals we have set whenever necessary to
keep them on track. Clear agreements and a detailed description of the target help
learners visualize a positive outcome. Show them what a good job looks like. Use
examples and templates and be ready to identify additional resources to keep people on
the right track.
