History is part of our identity as Filipinos.

It is the building blocks of a culture, a

community and defines the things that we have today culturally. It is the basis of our love for our

country. History as defined by Merriam-Webster is a chronological record of significant events

gathered by historians that often includes an explanation to the cause of the particular piece of

history, these particular pieces of history are those affecting a nation or institution. With that

being said, this essay tackles a particular piece of history that is mandated by the government to

be implemented. The focus of this essay is to provide the highlights of the said law, explaining

the provisions that manifest the study of Rizal and his works, and my personal view about the

said law.

Republic act no. 1425 entitled as ‘An Act to include in the curricula of all public and

private schools colleges and universities courses on the life and works and wrings of Jose Rizal,

particularly hos novels Noli me Tangere and el Filibusterismo, authorizing the printing and

distribution thereof, and for other purposes’ is an act that aims to re-dedicate our idea of freedom

and nationalism based on the concept and views of our fallen heroes that lived and died. The

highlights of this act include the intensifying national pride and national pride for every

individual taking up the course; the deeper study and understanding about Dr. Jose Rizal’s

novels Noli me Tangere and El Filibusterismo as a literature that encourages love for the

country. Discussing these novels educates and provides knowledge about the views of Rizal

regarding freedom, democracy, human rights and government limitations. Additionally, Republic

act no. 1425 includes the proper distribution of copies of both Noli me Tangere and El

Filibusterismo among public which is funded by the law amounting to 300, 000 pesos.

As an individual who is enrolled in this subject, I am in favor of Republic act no. 1425

which basically the mandatory study of the life and works of Rizal. Why? Because based on my
perspective, this act is the effort of the government to continue and commemorate the great contribution

of Dr. Jose Rizal on the road to the independence and nationalism of the Philippines. Recognizing the life

and works of Rizal can be related the present situation and condition of the society. Knowing what a

patriot did from that past can be a way of innovating current issues and problems through application of

idea innovation. Also, the highlights of the act make us foster the development of Filipino youth as a

member of a society and an institution.
