SECTION 0892002400 - CONCRETE CURB ANRAILWAY
CROSSINGD GUTTER
1. GENERALDESCRIPTION
This Specification section specifies the requirements and procedures for the design, furnishing
and installing of all material and equipment necessary to complete in place the Railway Crossing
as shown in the Drawings.
The works included in this Specification section shall cover the consultation with and obtaining
of approval for contents of the design and certification on the works completed from the relevant
agencies, supply and delivery of material and equipment to site, erection, test and commissioning
of all material and equipment in connection with the railway crossing installation to the extent
described and shown on the Drawings and include but not necessarily limited to:
(a) Preparation and submission of Shop DrawingsThis Specification section describes
requirements and procedures for concrete curb, concrete New Jersey Barrier curb, NMV
barrier curb and concrete curb and gutters shown on the drawings or required at locations
determined by the Engineer. Concrete curbs, barrier curb and gutters shall be constructed
in accordance with drawing details and in conformance with the requirements of this
Specification section. They shall be either pre-cast or cast-in-place in accordance with
drawing requirements or as required by the Engineer.
(b) Submission of detailed Material Lists
(c) All work associated with the removal (or modification) of sections of the existing crossing
systems and incorporation of remaining section in the permanent works.
(d) All other railway crossing equipment and services needed to complete a usable and
operable facility in accordance with the pertinent railway codes and local regulations for
railway crossing installation.

(k) Mortar
(l) Mortar, if required, shall be in accordance with the provisions of Specification section
08010.
(m) Preformed Expansion Joint Filler
(n) Unless otherwise approved by the Engineer, preformed joint filler shall be in accordance
with AASHTO M 33.
(o) Curb Paint
(p) Paint shall be of an approved industrial quality and shall conform to AASHTO M70-74.
(q) Removable Concrete Curb Hardware
(r) All hardware for the removable concrete curbs including bolts, nut washers, expansion
fittings shall be galvanized (zinc coated) in accordance with ASTM A123.
(s) Construction Methods
(t) Concrete Curbs, Barrier Curbs, Gutters and Curbs
(u) The Contractor shall refer to all relevant regulations to ascertain for himself the locations
and routes of all other utility services so as to maintain adequate clearance between the
railway and other utilitiesExcavation shall be made to the required depth, and the base
upon which the curb, barrier curb, gutter, or combination curb and gutter is to be set shall
be compacted to a firm even surface.
(v) The Contractor shall provide the shop drawings showing the exact routes of all rails,
connectors, link-up, sleeper, buffers and steel material, concrete slabs, ties, ballast, barrier,
guardhouse and all equipment and/or accessories, railway crossing signal for the
approval of the Engineer before commencing any part of the works. The Contractor’s shop
drawings of the railway crossing details shall be approved by the Railway Management
AuthorityAll soft and unsuitable material shall be removed and replaced with suitable
material.
(w) The Contractor shall draw all details of the existing railway and utilities on his as-built
drawings prepared in accordance with requirements given under Specification section
01010 “General Requirement”If shown on the Drawings bedding course material shall be
placed and compacted to form a bedding layer of the required thickness.
(x) Upon completion of the work, and as the condition of its acceptance, the Contractor shall
supply three copies of the Operation and Maintenance Manuals for the system in
accordance with the requirements under Specification section 01010 “General
Requirement”When a curb is placed next to a concrete pavement, expansion joints in the
curb shall be located opposite expansion joints in the pavement. Expansion joints shall be
formed at the intervals shown on the Drawings using preformed expansion Joint filler 1
centimeter in thick.
6. BARRIER
The railway crossing barrier shall be included as a part of the Railway Crossing. The Contractor
shall prepare the shop drawings for the barrier details which shall be approved by the Railway
Authority and the Engineer.
9. ELECTRIC SOURCE
The Contractor shall provide the electric power AC of 220 volts, 50 Hz to the site of the railway
crossing and the guardhouse by connection to local low voltage networks using electric cable.
All cable, conduit for cable used for railway crossing shall be in accordance with the current
standards for them.

10. MEASUREMENT AND PAYMENT
10.1 WHEN COMPLETED, THE CAST-IN PLACE CONCRETE SHALL BE COVERED WITH SUITABLE MATERIALS
AND KEPT MOIST FOR A PERIOD OF 3 DAYS. THE CONCRETE SHALL BE SUITABLY PROTECTED FROM
THE WEATHER AND TRAFFIC UNTIL THOROUGHLY HARDENED.
10.2 AFTERTHE CONCRETE HAS SET SUFFICIENTLY, THE SPACES IN FRONT AND BACK OF THE CURB AND
GUTTER SHALL BE REFILLED TO THE REQUIRED ELEVATION WITH THE PROPER MATERIAL, WHICH
SHALL BE COMPACTED IN LAYERS OF NOT MORE THAN 15 CENTIMETERS, UNTIL PROPERLY
COMPACTED.
10.3 FOR PRE-CAST UNITS, MORTAR JOINTS SHALL BE PLACED IN ACCORDANCE WITH REQUIREMENTS
INDICATED ON THE DRAWINGS.
10.4 THE FINISHED WORK SHALL BE TRUE TO LINE GRADE AND LEVEL TO WITHIN 3 MILLIMETERS AND
SHALL PRESENT A SMOOTH APPEARANCE FREE FROM KINKS AND DISTORTIONS VISIBLE TO THE EYE.
10.5 CONCRETE FINISHING SHALL BE AS INDICTED ON THE DRAWINGS OR AS REQUIRED BY THE
ENGINEER AND BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH PROVISIONS OF SPECIFICATION SECTION 06100.
10.6 THE CONCRETE BARRIER CURBS AND STONE CURBING THAT WILL BE RESET SHALL BE CAREFULLY
REMOVED AND STORED TO PREVENT DAMAGE. THE ITEMS SHALL BE THOROUGHLY CLEANED
(INCLUDING THE REMOVAL OF OLD MORTAR). ANY REPLACEMENTS DUE TO THE CONTRACTOR’S
NEGLIGENCE SHALL BE AT THE CONTRACTOR’S EXPENSE.
10.7 THE CONCRETE BARRIER CURBS THAT WILL BE RESET SHALL BE THOROUGHLY CLEANED, SUBJECTED
TO MINOR REPAIRS. THE BARRIER SHALL BE PAINTED IN ACCORDANCE WITH CURRENT VIETNAMESE
STANDARDS.
10.8 PRIOR TO THE INSTALLATION OF THE REMOVABLE CURBING, THE SURFACE SHALL BE MADE
CLEANED FLAT BY THE REMOVAL OF ALL PROTRUSIONS IN EXCESS OF 3MM. THE ANCHORING HOLES
SHALL BE THOROUGHLY CLEANED BY BLASTING WITH COMPRESSED AIR.
10.9 CURB MARKINGS
10.10 PAINT SHALL BE APPLIED ON A SURFACE THAT IS THOROUGHLY CLEAN AND DRY. ALL LOOSE AND
DETRITUS MATTER SHALL BE REMOVED PRIOR TO PAINT APPLICATION.
10.11 APPLICATIONS SHALL NOT BE MADE OVER OLD PAINT MARKINGS THAT ARE INCOMPATIBLE WITH
THE PAINT BEING APPLIED.
10.12 IF A PRIMER OR UNDERCOAT IS NECESSARY TO ENSURE PROPER ADHESION OR DISCOLORING, IT
SHALL BE FULLY COMPATIBLE WITH THE CONCRETE SURFACES AND THE PAINT BEING APPLIED.
10.13 PAINT SHALL BE APPLIED AT THE RATE OF APPLICATION AS RECOMMENDED BY THE MANUFACTURER
FOR THE APPLICATION AND AS APPROVED BY THE ENGINEER.
10.14 ALL PAINT SHALL BE THOROUGHLY MIXED IN THE FIELD TO KEEP PIGMENTS IN UNIFORM
SUSPENSION.
10.15 THE USE OF THINNERS OR OTHER ADDITIVES SHALL NOT BE PERMITTED UNLESS APPROVED BY THE
ENGINEER.
10.16 THE CLEANING, REPAIRING AND PAINTING OF THE BARRIER CURBS WHETHER NEW OR RESET IS
INCLUDED IN THE BID PRICE OF THE BARRIER CURB.

The Railway crossing design and construction shall not be measured but shall be paid as lump
sums at the rates indicated in the Bill of QuantitiesThe quantity measured for payment shall be
the number of linear meters of concrete of the several types and sizes of concrete gutter, curb,
barrier curb completed in place and accepted. Concrete curb, barrier curb and gutter shall be
measured in place along the center of the gutter, or curb. No pavement adjustment shall be made
for depressing of curbs for cross walks or driveway entrances or for curb drainage inlets or for
flanged end sections. The removable concrete curb shall be measured for payment based on
actual length installed. No payment adjustment shall be made the sloping or vertical style, which
are both covered by the removable curb in pay item.
Curb Markings shall be measured on a two-dimensional basis by the square meter for the areas
painted as indicated on the drawings or required by the Engineer.
