1.0 PURPOSE

The objective of this procedure is to ensure, that all the works for Concrete including
Installation of Steel rebar, Form Work, Concrete embedded Items, Testing,
Placement & Curing of Concrete are done systematically and correctly in line and
level accordance with IFC Drawings and SABIC Standard and project specifications.

2.0 SCOPE

This procedure is applicable to Concrete Works associated with the project titled,
Yanbu LOX BU under Contract No. 0072MH115

ACI 347R Guide to Formwork for Concrete

4.0 RESPONSIBILITIES

4.1 Construction Manager

The Construction Manager is over all responsible for implementation of this


Procedure and to ensure that his site team of Engineers and Foremen are aware of
this Method Statement and all resources, human material and equipment are
available to carry out the concrete works, as planned and without any delay.

4.2 Site Engineers

The Site Engineers will co-ordinate with site supervisor / Safety Officer and Foremen
for a safe and proper execution of works.

4.3 Site Foreman

Site Engineers and Foremen will ensure that, the concrete works are carried out in
according to the SES Specifications/ IFC Drawings and the Method Statement.

4.4 QC Inspectors

QC Inspector, in close interaction with site on going concrete related activities, will
ensure that, the Concrete works are carried out as per the project requirements,
Standard, & IFC Drawings. He is also responsible for the implementation of QC
related works as detailed in this procedure and for completing Quality Documents
for all related activities.
5.0 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

The DLCL Contractor shall execute the work which forms an integral part of various
construction works of the project. It shall provide all items, operations and methods
including labour, materials (except free issued materials), equipment, consumables
and other necessary items for the completion of the work.

6.0 SAFETY, HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS

6.1 All personnel, vehicles, materials and equipment involved in the activities shall
comply with the safety and security requirements. All workers shall undergo safety
orientation to obtain gate passes and vehicles & equipment’s shall be inspected to
obtain stickers. All workers must wear complete Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
in accordance with the safety work requirements.
6.2 Competent safety supervising personnel shall be provided in the working area.

6.3 All works shall be confined on the area provided in the plan. Necessary work permit
shall be obtained in accordance with SABIC Work Permit Procedure which shall be
approved by the concern department.
6.4 Transportation vehicles with passenger seats shall be provided for travel of the
workers to and from the jobsite.
6.5 Appropriate and adequate warning devices and hard barricades shall be installed
around the perimeter of the work area.
6.6 First aid facilities, Site rest shed, Smoking shelter, drinking water shed, iced & safe
drinking water shall be provided to the workers.
6.7 Portable toilets shall be provided in the worksite and shall be disposed of regularly.
6.8 Other necessary and related works shall be executed in accordance with the Safety
provisions of the project.
7.0 WORK EXECUTION PROCEDURE

7.1 General

7.1.1 The normal working time will be ten (10) hours per weekday and six (6) days work per
week. However, working time can be adjusted if situation demands.
7.1.2 DLCL shall adhere to the data and drawings approved by LINDE. Any doubt or
discrepancy shall be brought to the attention of the approving authority.
7.1.3 Supervisors and Foremen shall be at the jobsite at every phase of the work.
Adequate supervision for every job shall be necessary in order to ensure satisfactory
performance of the work.
7.2 Methodology of work

(A) Prior To Placement Of Concrete


(i) Excavation & Backfilling
a. Excavation shall include excavations for Footings, Tanks, Pits, Basements of
Buildings, Fire walls, Pipe Supports/Sleepers, Thrust Anchors, Paving slab on
grade etc.
b. Excavation shall be performed as required by the design drawings to the
dimensions, grades, and elevations as noted and as required for formwork
and allowance for compaction equipment shall be considered.
c. When soft and compressible soil is encountered at footing grades as shown
on the drawings, such soil shall be removed and replaced with compacted
fill or backfill as specified in &ASU C – SD 2001 Civil General Specification or
lean (1700 psi minimum 28-day compressive strength) concrete.
d. Areas to receive fill, foundations shall be free of roots, trash, snow, ice or other
unsuitable material.

e. Compacting shall begin only after the fill or backfill has been properly placed
and the material to be compacted is at the proper moisture content.
f. Fill material shall be placed in lifts not exceeding 150 mm (6 in) in Compacted
Layer.
g. Fill or backfill shall be compacted and tested as per &ASU C – SD 2001Civil
General Specification.
(ii) Reinforcement
a. All reinforcing bars Normal or Deformed Steel ASTM615A with minimum yield
strength of 60 ksi shall be used as per &ASU C – SD 200 Civil General
Specification
b. Reinforcement bars shall be bent using the correct bending method as per
ASTM/SABIC/ Standards
c. Reinforcement bars with any de laminations or visual damage shall not be
use.
d. Reinforcement tie wire shall not be smaller than 16 gage and shall conform to
ASTM A 82 and &ASU C – SD 2001 Civil General Specification
e. Manufacturer's test certificates for mechanical & chemical tests shall be
submitted to Client for approval and records.
f. Size and Spacing of reinforcement shall be strictly in compliance with the IFC
drawings.
g. Finished rebar work shall be subject to inspection by Client inspection
personnel prior to placing of concrete.
h. Concrete spacer blocks shall be made of the same materials, to the same
specification, Plastic spacers may be used where required, after SABIC
approval
i. Dowels or reinforcing bars left exposed for connection with future work shall
be protected.
(iii) Form Work
a. All form works shall have appropriate shoring, bracing, spacing, supports and
spacers strong enough to maintain rigidity while placing, vibration and setting
of concrete as per ACI-347.
b. Correct Survey Coordinates and centre lines and control joints shall be
maintained for all form works
c. All joints of the form work shall be properly sealed to avoid any leaks while
placing of concrete.
d. Thorough checking shall be carried out to ensure that construction joints,
expansion joints, key ways etc. are installed properly and the openings for
vents, pipes etc., are properly located and have adequate strength.

e. Forms shall be thoroughly cleaned of all dirt, mortar and foreign matter and
coated with a release agent before each use.
f. Minimum Concrete Cover shall be used as per IFC Drawings.
g. Forms shall not be removed in less than the minimum periods mentioned in
ACI 347.
(iv) Embedded Items
a. All sleeves, inserts, anchor bolts Base Plates and other embedded items shall
be installed in accordance with the IFC drawings and supported against
displacement.
b. Anchor bolts Type K & Type KR shall be in accordance to &ASU-0100-C-LA
1002 (EN) & Project IFC Drawings.
c. Projecting steel items (such as grating angles, Steel plates, etc.) which are
attached to the formwork and cast at the concrete surface shall be coated
with &ASU C – SD 2001
(B) Placement & Testing of Concrete
a. All Concrete Works shall be done with SABIC/ Approved Mix Design &
Approved Concrete Plant as per &ASU C – SD 2001 (EN).
b. Equipment made of aluminium alloys shall not be used for pump lines, chutes
used to discharge concrete from a truck mixer.
c. Concrete shall not be placed prior to a recorded pre-placement inspection
and authorization to proceed by Company/Client.
d. Raking shall not be used for movement of concrete after placement.
e. Vibrators shall not be used to move concrete inside forms.
f. The temperature of fresh concrete shall be maintained between 25 and 30
°C, and at the time of placement shall not exceed 30 °C and slump shall be
tested in accordance with ASTM C 143.
g. Concrete shall not be dropped freely where reinforcing will cause
segregation nor shall it be dropped freely more than 1 m.
h. Concrete shall be deposited as near as possible in its final position to avoid
segregation due to re-handling or flowing.
i. Placed concrete shall be consolidated by mechanical vibrating equipment
supplemented by hand spading, Roding or tamping. Equipment and
procedure for consolidation of concrete shall be in accordance with &ASU C
– SD 2001 (EN).
j. Concrete shall be placed on a clean surface. Standing water shall be
removed prior to placement of concrete.
k. Concrete shall be placed in accordance with &ASU C – SD 2001 (EN).
(C) Curing of Concrete

a. Curing shall be commence immediately after finishing (flatwork) or within two


(2) hours after consolidation.
b. Maximum total dissolved solids in water used for curing shall not exceed 1000
parts per million.
c. Water curing shall be continuous for seven (7) days based on attaining 7- day
compressive strength for structural concrete, refer to 1.3.2 of ACI-308R
d. Hessian shall be in accordance with AASHTO M 182 and shall weigh 0.29
kg/m2 and Impervious sheeting shall be polyethylthene, and in accordance
with ASTM C 171.
(D) Coating and Protection

a. A plasticized sheet vapor barrier, minimum 0.25 mm (12 mils) in thickness and
a 50 mm sub-slab (lean concrete) shall be placed beneath concrete
foundations.
b. Protective coatings shall be applied for underground concrete surface. The
coating shall extend continuously up to 50mm above grade level.
c. A plasticized sheet vapour barrier shall be placed below and around the
sides of concrete that is placed directly into excavation without the use of
formwork, where coal tar or bitumen coating cannot be applied.
(E) Testing and Inspection
An independent SABIC approved testing agency will perform field and
laboratory testing in accordance with &ASU C – SD 2001 (EN).“Ready-Mix
OPC Concrete.”
8.0 QA/QC REQUIREMENTS

All Reinforced Concrete works shall be executed in accordance with the Approved
Project ITP and the QA/QC Requirements within the SABIC Engineering Standards
(SES) and other relevant specifications as provided in the reference above
mentioned.
Documents and submittals shall be approved by Company/Client before materials
and equipment’s prior to use of it in the project.
Inspection and Testing of Materials for the project shall be performed by third party
as an accredited and approved independent third party in the project.

9.0 COORDINATION AND INSPECTION

The DLCL shall maintain effective liaison to the Company for proper coordination
and submission of reports and other documents necessary for the execution of the
work. Inspection for the works shall be done in accordance with the procedure
provided in the ITP’s of the project

10.0 SITE CLEAN - UP

After completion of all works, final clean-up shall immediately follow. The DLCL shall
conduct clean-up work by collecting all debris, wastes, excess soil and other
materials and disposed of at the designated location.
