Water Proofing Manual

Basement
 Element : Lift Pit
 Recommended System for all regions: 1.2 mm thick preapplied HDPE membrane at
positive side and 2 component cementitious coating with screed protection at
negative side

Sketch of Recommended System:-

Method Statement:
 The purpose of this method statement is to provide a well waterproofed lift pit, such
that there is negligible possibility of water leakage.
 The method statement describes, creation of an exterior envelope completely
covering the lift pit from outer side and providing additional protection from the
negative side.
 In order to achieve the exterior envelope, it is necessary to cast the lift pit during the
casting of raft slab and maintain complete enclosure with concrete.
 The PCC for raft is casted first. As the HDPE membrane cannot be bent to 90 degree
angle, it is also important to provide rounded 45 degree chamfer at the edge of the
PCC for raft please refer the document for raft waterproofing.

 After this, cast plum concrete for the lift pit wall support. A 45 degree coving shall be
provided at the corner of the lift pit base PCC and the plum concrete from inside. This
will ensure that the HDPE membrane can be taken to the vertical side without a sharp
bent.
 Then the PCC is laid at the base of the lift pit. After the concrete is properly set, HDPE
membrane is loosely laid at base of lift pit with the non-adhesive side towards the PCC
and continued on vertical portions of lift pit. Mechanically fasten the membrane
vertically using flat headed fixings appropriate to the substrate.
 Use fixings at typically 600 mm centres or as per agreed site condition/ requirement
to secure the membrane flat against the substrate. Fixing can be made through selvage
using flat headed fastens, this allows firmly rolled overlaps which is covered by
subsequent strip of HDPE membrane.
 The membrane should be carried to a minimum of 300 mm and up to 500 mm above
the level of PCC for raft and secured on the shuttering and protected with temporary
aluminium flashing. Apply the HDPE membrane with plastic surface against the
levelled substrate (plum concrete is preferred or 20 mm thick plywood shuttering).
 Then the reinforcements are placed at the base of the lift pit and formwork is provided
for casting of lift pit base. Once this concrete is cured, hydrophilic water stop is placed
at the centre of the section between the base and vertical walls. Then the
reinforcement and formwork for vertical sections is installed and the concrete is
poured up to the base of the chamfered edge of PCC for raft.
 Once the concrete is set, another hydrophilic water stop is laid all across the lift pit in
similar way that of the bottom hydrophilic water stop.
 Before the raft concrete is laid the HDPE membrane is laid over the PCC for raft slab
and joined with the overhang from the vertical section of lift pit as shown in the
drawing. An overlap of 100 mm is made and covered with one sided HDPE self adhesive
tape of the same membrane.
 Then the process of casting raft slab is commenced.
 Once the raft is casted and sufficiently cured, an upstand of 100 to 150 mm is created
using concrete exactly around the edge of the lift pit.
 Once the raft slab achieves minimum compressive strength of 20 MPa, check for the
leakages within the lift pit before starting internal (negative side) waterproofing.
 Either dampen the surface with water if primer is not recommended or apply primer
as per vender’s recommendation.
 Fillet is made at the junction of horizontal and vertical surface to eliminate the sharp
corners on internal side.

 2 component elastomeric cementitious coating is applied in two coats to achieve

minimum thickness of 2 mm, with the help of brush or roller. The coating is carried
over the concrete upstand and 300 mm beyond on the raft concrete.
 Water proofing coating is cured for at least 72hours.
 Protection screed / cement sand mortar screed of minimum 50 mm thick is applied
over 2 component cementitious coating for protection on horizontal side and 20 to 30
mm plaster is applied on vertical side. The protection plaster is also carried over the
concrete upstand and covering the elastomeric cementitious coating over the raft
surface.
 Protection screed and plaster is cured.
