Method Statement for Installation HDPE Lining to R.C Tank

1.0 Surface Preparation by Main Contractor

 To clear the surface of walls and floors of R.C tanks of any cement or mortar droppings
and construction debris.
 To ensure that the surface of walls and floors be flat and smooth without sharp projection
from the surface of the tank.
 To patch or plaster any honeycombed.
 To ensure that the surface of the floors and sump be dry (dewatering when necessary)
and free of water ponding.
 To ensure that sharp converging corner of concrete tanks be blinded (chamfered) to offer
a smooth transition curve for placement of HDPE Liner.
 Before HDPE Lining works commenced, the tanks have to be waterproofed with coating
and to be certify by consultant / client that the tank have already carried out ponding test.

2.0 HDPE Sheet Preparation

 Each roll of sheet for the walls will be pre-cut into appropriate sizes of 7.0m (maximum)
length and rolled up into rolls approximately 300 to 600mm diameter and width depends
on tank height.
 The tank shall consist of appropriate sized panels for the base and will be pre-cut
according to the base section of the tank. The actual sizes will be altered subject to actual
site condition.

3.0 HDPE Sheet Installation

 Scaffolds and / or ladders will be built to a height approximately 1.0m to 1.5m below the
agreed fixing level of the battening strip. The scaffolds and or ladders shall be used for the
panel installation along the walls of the tanks and for the operator of the welding machine.
 Each roll of HDPE Sheet for the wall will be vertically unrolled manually after temporary
fixing along the wall surface to be lined in sequence and battened at an agreed fixed level
(above overflow level) from the top to hold them from falling down accordingly. Battening
of the HDPE Sheet at the top edge shall consist of Hot dipped galvanized metal strip c/w
compressible rubberized sponge and nylon impact anchor.
 After the battening and laying of the sheet on the walls has been completed, welding of
the vertical joint will be carried out with the Double Seam Automatic welding machine
and / or the Handheld Extrusion welding machine whichever is more suitable.

4.0 Welding of HDPE Sheet

4.1 Hot Wedge Double Fusion Welding

The primary type of welding equipment used today for welding of polyethylene panels is
the hot wedge double fusion welding system. It provides an excellent welding consistency
by reducing human error and error caused by fatigue, this self-propelled hot wedge welder
is used to weld long continues seams and can travel at speeds of three (3) to five (5)
meters per minute. The unit contains a high temperature split wedge used to melt the
plastic along the weld lines on the overlapped panels. The liner panels. The liner panels
are then squeezed together by pressure rollers so that the two sheets fuse together.

4.2 Extrusion Welding

The extrusion welder provides heat and an extrudate of molten plastic made from the
same material as the sheet. The molten plastic is deposited over the edge of two surface
to be welded. The surface to be welded are tacked together at overlap to form a
temporary bond prior to welding. The area to be used for welding will then be grinned to
provide a roughened surface for the extrudate to be better adhere to the surface.

5.0 Piping and Ladder Connection

 Sealing of all internal inlet and outlet piping connection to HDPE Liner are depend on the
types of piping used and method of installation shall be at the discretion of our supervisor.

 Wrapping with HDPE Sheet pipe sleeves c/w G.I fabricated clamp.
 Welding of addition M.S flange c/w bolts and capped with G.I flanges.
 Installation of existing ladder shall be above maximum water level.

6.0 Checking

 All welds shall be checked by using the point stress test whereby a screwdriver will be
used to apply a point load in between the surface of the sheet and the weld to see if there
is any debonding of the welded seam. This will determined the physical continuity of all
the welded seams.
 The surface of the laid sheet will be checked for any holes or punctures and shall be
repair by patching new HDPE Sheet welded by extrusion welding.

7.0 Repair Procedure

 Any portion of the HDPE Liner exhibiting sign of detect damage occur during construction,
shall be repaired. Several produces exist for the repair of the areas.
 The repair procedures available includes :-

 Patching, used to repair large holes and tears.

 Spot welding or seaming, used to repair small tears, pinholes, or other minor,
localized defect.
 Capping, used to repair large lengths of failed seams.
 Removing bad seam and replacing with a strip of new material welded in place.

8.0 Final Inspection

 The final inspection included a visual inspection of the complete HDPE Lined tank
including the seam, individual panels, piping connection and battening system.

9.0 Final Inspection

 Prior to HDPE Lining, the R.C Tanks have to be certify by consultant that it is leak-
proof. The application of HDPE Lining is for the purpose of Hygienic and NOT as a water
proofing membrane.

10.0 Method Statement for Water Tightness Test

i. Upon completion of HDPE Lining works, a visual inspection on all the HDPE Lining joints inside
the tank.
ii. Water tightness test shall be carried by filling the tank to 5’ 0’’ level which is above the box
brackets. This level will be maintain for 8 hours and a level marking will be done on the level
indicator.
iii. After 8 hours, a visual inspection around the tank to see any leakages. At the same times, to
check the level marking on the level indicator to see any drop in level.
iv. If no leakages, the tank shall be fill to 10’ 0’’ level (or max. level) and marking on the level
indicator.
v. After 8 hours, a visual inspection around the tank to see any leakages. At the same times, to
check the level marking on the level indicator to see any drop in level.
vi. In the event there are leakages or drop in level shown on the level indicator, the water in tank
shall be drain out and the HDPE Lining will be re-inspected and repair.
