Method Statement:

Step 1:- Surface Preparation-

 Ensure that the concrete of retaining wall is cured for a period of 14 days before starting
application of bitumen modified SBS membrane.
 The concrete surface should be levelled, sound and should not have any hollow areas.
 Repair all the hollowness using polymer modified pre packed cementitious mortar. Allow
it to cure for 7 days before application of membrane.
 Chase and open the construction joints to a U-shaped groove of approximately 25 mm in
width and 25 mm in depth. Seal the groove using polymer modified prepacked
Cementitious mortar and finish to a smooth surface.
 In case if honeycombing or larger voids are seen on and around the construction joint,
grouting may be necessary by using either all fines non shrink cementitious grout or site
mixed grout with expansive additive. Plot such areas on as built drawing.
 Clean the surface so that it is free from loose dust particles, laitance, curing compounds,
release agents, oil or any other particles that will affect adhesion of membrane.
 In case of water table above raft level apply the epoxy based moisture insensitive primer.
Mix the two components (base and hardener) prior to application, ensuring uniform mix
and apply with brush or roller.
 In case of water table below raft level apply the solvent based bitumen primer. Mix the
primer thoroughly and apply with brush or roller.
 In both cases, application of membrane shall start only after the primer is completely dry.

Step 2:- Application of Self Adhesive SBS modified Bitumen Membrane

 Unroll the 2 mm thick Self adhesive SBS modified bitumen membrane over the retaining
wall aligning over the proper marking all over the area.
 Roll back the membrane without changing its alignment or orientation.
 Peel off the release film from the self-adhesive side and start unrolling the membrane
while pressing to the surface.
 Smoothen the membrane from the centre of the edges by pressing in order to remove
entrapped air.
 Laying of membrane is done in such a manner that the roll's alignment does not get
disturbed.
 Use iron roller against the applied membrane to ensure proper and strong bonding with
primed surface.
 Overlap Procedure: Lay a second roll of membrane alongside of the first membrane
ensuring the overlap of 100 mm between the both.
 Overlapping area is also defined as selvage. In some cases the manufacturer provides
marking for the overlap area.
 End Joints are made with overlap of 150 mm.
 Termination of membrane at top: The membrane should be extended over the retaining
wall and the basement top upto a minimum of 200 mm above FGL/FFL.
 At the top of retaining wall above 200 mm from FGL/FFL, cut a groove of 20 mm X 10 mm
on the concrete surface along the periphery of retaining wall.
 Carry the membrane up to the centre of the groove and then seal by using 1K or 2K PU
Sealant. Since this is only a termination, one may also use an epoxy base putty.
 Termination of membrane at bottom:
For case 1: Refer the drawing for bottom termination for water table above raft level
detail A
Carry be self adhesive SBS modified bitumen membrane upto 100mm beyond the top
edge of HDPE membrane. This joint shall be covered with 1.5mm thick liquid applied PU
membrane. 50mm over HDPE membrane and 50mm over the SBS modified bitumen
membrane. Allow to cure for minimum 7 days before back filling.
For case 2: Refer the drawing for bottom termination for water table below raft level
Carry be self adhesive SBS modified bitumen membrane upto 300mm below the actual
raft concrete level and terminate it in a similar way to the top termination detail.

 Protection of Membrane: Ensure that waterproofing membrane, footing and surrounding

area are cleared of any debris, dust or dirt.
 Geotextile fabric backed HDPE dimple boards should be spot bonded properly over the
surface of the membrane. The geotextile surface shall face the backfill.
 While laying the protection over the membrane merge adjoining sheets by overlapping
them 200 to 300 mm and interlocking the cuspated dimples.
 The end portion of the protection board on the top surface shall be protected and secured
by using either aluminium or canvas flashing while back filling. This should be removed
once the back filling is completed.
 Note: It is advisable to provide half round gutters beneath the construction joints as well
as retaining wall and slab intersections, as a secondary control measure to drain out any
water which may appear due to some workmanship related issues.
