(2) Mathematics achievement test scores for 10000 students were found to
have mean and standard deviation of 500 and 100, respectively. If the
distribution of scores is bell shaped, approximately how many of the
scores
(a) falls in the interval 400-600?
(b) exceeds 700?
(c) falls below 200?

(a) The standard deviation of for the interval 400 to 600 is 1 below and above the mean.
It was discovered that approximately 68% of the observations fall within 1 standard deviations from the
mean through the empirical rule. When 68% is multiplied to the total population of 10,000, 6,800
students are expected to fall in the interval 400 to 600.

(b) 2 standard deviations above the mean with a score of 700. Based on the empirical rule, we can
conclude that approximately 2.5% or 250 of the students are able to exceed the score of 700.

(c) The score of 200 is marked 3 standard deviations below the mean. Base on the empirical rule, we can
conclude that 0.15% of the population or 15 students, have scores below 200.
