Title: Critical Theory

Critical criminology is a way of looking at crime and deviance as something not

inherent in humanity. Instead, it’s a result of the social and economic conditions in
society.
Critical criminology is multi-disciplinary, meaning it draws from several different
academic disciplines, including sociology, philosophy, history, politics, and others, to
analyze the crime.
Karl Marx’s Theory of Criminology
Karl Marx’s criminology theory is based on the idea of class conflict. He believed that
poor, working-class people commit crimes to survive, while rich people commit crimes
for personal gain. Marx also believed that members of the working-class police other
members of the working class through passive acceptance of the status quo.
These crimes, according to Marx, are perpetrated by the upper class in order to achieve
personal wealth. According to Young and Nilsen (2000), this definition is flawed
because it fails to recognize the involvement of lower- and middle-class persons in
white-collar crime.
White-collar criminals
White-collar crimes have been defined as illegal activities committed by business and
government professionals. These may include:
 Embezzlement
 Mail fraud
 Wire fraud
 Money laundering
 Securities fraud or stock manipulation

I chose this critical theory because it is what I see in reality. According to Karl Marx's
theory, there is a class conflict between the upper class, middle class, and lower class.
The upper class is made up of white-collar crimes such as embezzlement, mail fraud,
and wire fraud, among others. Not only are white-collar crimes related, but so are social
class status, politics, and economics.
Here are some examples of crimes based on my research and analysis of the social
class standing and power of the people who commit these crimes.
George Perry Floyd Jr. was an African-American man who was murdered by a police
officer in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
George Perry Floyd Jr was born in Fayetteville, North Carolina, on October 14, 1973, to
George Perry and Larcenia "Cissy" Jones Floyd.
Floyd attended Ryan Middle School and Yates High School, graduating in 1993. He was
a co-captain of the basketball team and a power forward at Yates. He was also a tight
end on the football team, and his squad won the Texas state championships in 1992.
Floyd returned to Houston from college in Kingsville, Texas, in 1995, where he worked
as an automotive customizer and played club basketball. He also performed as a rapper
in the hip-hop group Screwed Up Click under the stage name Big Floyd. Floyd was
imprisoned eight times between 1997 and 2005 for various offenses such as drug use,
theft, and trespass. Floyd was charged with aggravated robbery with a dangerous
weapon in 2007 after allegedly impersonating a water department worker and barging
into an apartment with five other men, then holding a pistol to a woman's stomach and
searching for stuff to steal.
In 2014, Floyd moved to Minneapolis to help rebuild his life and find work, he completed
a 90-day rehabilitation program at the Turning Point program in north Minneapolis.
Floyd moved to Minneapolis in 2014 to help him rebuild his life and find job, and he
finished a 90-day treatment program at the Turning Point program in north Minneapolis.
Floyd voiced his need for work and began working as a security guard at Harbor Light
Center, a Salvation Army homeless shelter. He lost his job at Harbor Light and went on
to work at a few other places.
Derek Chauvin, a white Minneapolis police officer, murdered Floyd on May 25, 2020, by
pressing his knee on Floyd's neck for 9 minutes and 29 seconds while Floyd was
handcuffed face down in the street, Floyd pleaded over and over that he couldn't
breathe. Even though Floyd was immobile and had no pulse in the final two minutes,
Chauvin kept his knee on Floyd's neck and back as emergency medical personnel
arrived to treat Floyd. The medical examiner found that Floyd's heart stopped while he
was being restrained and that his death was a homicide, "Cardiopulmonary arrest
complicating law enforcement subdual, restraint, and neck compression," according to
the report. Though it's possible that fentanyl consumption and recent methamphetamine
use contributed to the death. Floyd's death was also ruled a homicide by a second
autopsy, which cited asphyxia due to neck and back compression. It ruled out any
underlying medical problems and stated that Floyd being able to speak while under
Chauvin's knee does not mean he could breathe.
Chauvin was sacked and charged with murder in the second, third, and second degree,
as well as manslaughter in the second degree. On April 20, 2021, Chauvin was
convicted guilty of all three murder and manslaughter offenses. After determining that
Chauvin handled Floyd "with extraordinary cruelty," Hennepin County District Judge
Peter Cahill allowed the prosecution to seek a longer prison sentence for him on May
12, 2021. the Minneapolis city council approved a settlement of $27 million to the Floyd
family following a wrongful death lawsuit.
Following Floyd's death, protests were organized around the world against police
officers using excessive force against black people and a lack of police accountability.
There have been numerous calls to defund and disband the police force. Protests
occurred the day after his death in Minneapolis.
The social position of two people, white and black, is at odds in this remark, which is
why police officers utilize their power against him to put pressure on the black guy to kill
him. Racism begins with persons in positions of authority or who are of a higher social
class, which is why they conduct acts of violence against others.
The crime is initiated by someone who has the power to engage in physical abuse,
fraud, embezzlement, social status, religions, and other crimes by utilizing their authority
and willingness to perpetrate them.
For me, and based on Karl Max's idea, crime began with a class conflict: the poor do
crime to survive, such as theft or robbery, while the wealthy conduct crime for personal
benefit, such as fraud or stomping on a person's social position just like our government
in the position. The critical theory is best example for me why crime is started and how
explain it.
My example of this notion is an ex-police officer named Jonel Nuezca who killed an
elderly lady and his son, Frank Anthony and Nanay Sonia, because of his power and
status of life and granted of the government to carry of gun. To the people in the
position of the government who do corruption for their own personal benefits that’s is
why this crime committed based of the status of our life and needs. The law does not
exempt anyone, regardless of status.
