A boy-scout cannot win elections

THERE are two things that hap-

pen to you when you exit pol-
itics. You either become more
cynical about politics – or else
you become more truthful to
yourself, less hypocritical and
start speaking the truth more
freely.
Therese Comodini Cachia, the
former Nationalist MEP and
MP, in my view falls in the sec-
ond category.
I may not agree with all her
viewpoints, but her decision to
stand up to Tonio Borg’s dia-
tribe in the press against the
pro-choice lobby was com-
mendable.
Comodini Cachia did not at
least mince her words when Jo-
seph Muscat chose to get back
into the limelight with his role
representing Malta Premier

I guess Hibs fan and football
fanatic Jason Azzopardi, anoth-

anything about Muscat, in full
cognisance that Hibs actually
backed Muscat’s nomination.

‘Bouncers can’t police Paceville’; but nor

can imaginary policemen…
IN case you were wondering, that’s a ref-
erence to a particular news headline this
week: ‘Bouncers can’t keep policing the
streets of Paceville, says club owner’ (sub-
heading: ‘Only stronger police presence
will be able to control situation’)…
The quote itself is attributed to Jona-
than Grima – owner of Club Havana,
among other Paceville establishments –
who also said: “We’ve seen an improve-
ment because whereas, before, there
were none at least now we have four
or five extra officers. […] But that’s not
enough. We need a proper squad of po-
lice officers who are crowd controllers.
Paceville cannot continue being policed
by our bouncers whom we employ to en-
sure order inside the clubs.”
Which brings us to the ‘situation’ he’s
talking about: described in the article
as “the apparent upsurge of violence in
the Paceville entertainment hub in St Ju-
lian’s over the past few weeks.”
Right: at this point I have to concede
that none of what follows is based on any
personal experience (my own days as a
regular Paceville-prowler are at least a
couple of decades behind me, by now):
even though, on the rare occasions when
I do venture through those once-familiar
streets… I notice certain little ‘changes’,
here and there.
Like, for instance, the fact that a night-
life zone which was once limited to the
immediate environs of only two streets,
to speak of – ‘Ball’, and ‘Wilga’ - has now
spawled out unevenly in all directions:

Are Maltese companies using Artificial

IN 2019, while we were formu-

launch a survey amongst Mal-

gauge awareness about their
knowledge of AI; we needed
to understand how they use it
and whether they are comfort-

the strategy was long-term, we
wanted to ascertain their plans
and challenges related to deploy-
ing AI solutions in businesses.
From that study, it became ev-
ident that we needed to build
awareness of what constitutes AI
and how it can be deployed, par-
ticularly amongst Small and Me-

might find it harder to adopt
new technologies. At the time,
around 50% of respondents knew
what the term meant but did not
correctly understand the value

A brilliant final awaits

AFTER a gruelling contest, five
finalists will go head-to-head on
Friday in Malta’s first TV talent
show for musicians, Brillanti.
Produced and presented by vet-
eran TV personality and violinist
Joseph Chetcuti, the first season
of Brillanti draws to a close with
a breath-taking final that will
see the winner take home a cash
prize of €10,000 and the chance
to play as a soloist with an in-
ternally renowned orchestra, all
expenses paid by the European
Foundation for Support of Cul-
ture.
Brillanti airs on ONE TV and
was intended as a platform for
musicians striving for success,
popularity and recognition and
giving them the opportunity to
display their talent.
Initially, musicians from all
walks of life flocked to audi-
tion and from more than 200
applicants, 50 were shortlisted
for the initial auditions. These
were shortlisted to 20, who pro-
gressed to the Bravura round. At
this point, 12 semi-finalists were
chosen, until these were whittled
down to five finalists.
And who will the winner be?
For sure they must be the one
that will impress most the pan-
el of judges: The chairman of
the jury, Wayne Marshall, who
in the year 2021 was awarded
the OBE by Queen Elizabeth II,
Nicolà Said a soprano diva with
immense talent, Albert Storace a

years, Mro. Guilio Mazzocante
