There are a number of ways that mechanical advantage systems (pulley / hauling systems) may be
constructed. Illustrated below are a few of the more common ones. In general, these systems may be
either inline (constructed using the actual haul line) or add-on (constructed using a separate rope and
then piggy-backed onto the haul line), and can be either simple or compound. Note: Progress capture
(ratchet) has been omitted for clarity

A compound system is constructed by using one mechanical advantage system to pull on another to
multiply their effectiveness. In the first example we have a 2:1 system pulling on another 2:1 system
to create a 4:1 system (2x2=4)
