New SSD Board firmware version 6.05m

TECHNICAL INFORMATION
2  TNEU1400294EN N

Background
To further improve and decrease the SSD Board failure ratio, a new USB tool has been released. The new USB
tool will update the SSD Board firmware to version 6.05m. To minimize the SSD board failure ratio, please from
now on use the new USB tool whenever you need to perform a SSD Board firmware update.

Symptom
In very rare cases even with SSD board firmware version ver. 6.03m the “continuous reboot problem”, which has
been fixed with this version, can reappear.

Cause
The cause is a new bug in the SSD board firmware version 6.03m where a process to increment a counter for
abnormal block handling is missing. Within a timeframe of 5 years the chance that data can be corrupted due to the
missing process (causing continues rebooting) is between 0.3 – 1%.

Countermeasure
1. KMI released a new USB tool which has to be used to upgrade SSD Board firmware. The tool will update
SSD Board firmware 6.01n/6.02n/6.03m to 6.05m.
Please download the USB tool from CSES
DLBT1412119EN.

2. Additionally the 4th generation firmware has implemented the capability to automatically update SSD Board
firmware version 6.03m to 6.05m, in case the firmware update will be performed via USB. If the firmware
update will be performed via ISW SSD Board firmware update process will not be done.
Please download the firmware from CSES as soon it will be released. Release is planned for end of July.

Action to be performed
1. In case the SSD Board has to be exchanged and you received a SSD Board with SSD Board firmware
version 6.0.3m (Board with white dot on the chip). You can
a. Install the new SSD Board and use the new USB tool to update the SSD Board firmware to version
6.05m.
th
b. Install the new SSD Board and update the firmware to the 4 generation firmware. This is
recommended for all cases where the customer environment does not require staying on the
th
current firmware level, due to firmware customisation or application dependencies. The 4
generation firmware includes new features for Service Productivity Improvement (SPI) wherefore it
is recommended to upgrade, if possible.

If your customer situation allows the firmware update, perform the firmware update as usual with a
prepared USB Stick installed in the USB Service slot. After the machine has been switched on and
booted into the firmware update mode, then on the firmware update screen upper right corner, you
will find the current installed SSD Board firmware version.

After successful update, the Firmware update screen will show SSD Download completed like
shown below.

Remark: In cases where you update a machine which has already SSD Board firmware version 6.05m
installed the SSD Download message will not be shown in the above Firmware update screen.
In cases where you update a machine which still has SSD Board firmware 6.01n/6.02n installed
the SSD Download message will show a “NG” because the firmware can only update SSD board
firmware 6.03m. In this case please use the new USB tool to update the SSD Board firmware to
version 6.05m

2. In case you have already received a SSD Board, with SSD Board firmware 6.05m installed just exchange
the SSD Board as usual.

The new SSD Boards with firmware version 6.05m can be identified with a green dot on the box as well as
by the change of the ID number from 13XXXX to 14XXXX on the Board itself. See on below SSD Board
picture the red circle to find the location of the ID.

7. Turn the main power switch ON.

8. CHECK if “Press [START] to begin the SSD Firmware update” is shown in the display.
9. Press [START] key which is shown on the control panel (the download will begin).

Press START

DO NOT TURN OFF THE MAIN SWITCH

WHILE THE UPDATE IS RUNNING!!!
If a power failure occurs the following two symptoms may happen:
A) “Continuous rebooting”
In this case it is necessary to exchange the SSD-Board with a new one.
Start the device with MFP firmware. After successful MFP firmware update the SSD-Board
firmware need to be updated.

B) “No boot up”

In this case you do not need to exchange the SSD-Board. You have to update the MFP Firmware.
After successful update of the MFP firmware, please perform the recommended SSD-Board
firmware update procedure.

Attention!
10. CHECK if “Download OK Please turn off the main SW” is shown on the control panel and the
START key is blue colored.
11. If the download is OK please turn the main switch OFF.

12. To verify if the update was successful turn the main switch on and enter the CE mode and check if
the MFP Firmware version is the same as before the SSD Board firmware update.
13. We like to recommend to sign the device, e.g. with a red dot on the type label. This will match to the
labeling of the devices which are modified in the warehouse.

During the update process the following conditions may happen:

1. Download NG

 Attempt SSD Board FW download once again

 Reseat SSD board if failed again
2. Error Code 3300/3320
Error code [3300] is caused by the SSD backup failure similar with [3320].
Therefore, when this trouble code will occur in the field, please proceed with the following steps:
 Turn the main power Off and On
 Perform the HDD format
 Perform the SSD update tool again

Remark: If the error code still exists on the machine, please replace the SSD board with a new one.

Error Code [3320] happens when performing the SSD Board firmware update with the USB tool. During the
update all area in SSD should be dumped once. During the update process there is the possibility that while
the unused area is read an ECC error occur which causes the error code [3320].

KMI recognized that this Error Code [3320] is caused by the old type of SSDB which was mounted on Zeus
MLK machine in early stage of mass-production.
3. After replacement of the SSD Board, new SSD Board fails again.
The new SSD board may be physically damaged Please exchange once again with a new one.
4. Detected that the number of BAD Block exceed limit
 SSD Board works for now but it may happen that it need to be replaced sometime within its life time
 It is recommended to replace the SSD Board on the next visit as a preventive action.

5. The upgrade tool on the USB does not match to MFP

 Use the USB with correct upgrade tool

6. SSD Board FW has been already updated

 No further action required

7. The result of pattern check is always NG

Please be aware if you do the SSD Pattern check, in self-diagnostic mode, the result of pattern check is
always NG.
As described on TNBT1400012EN, when the original SSD board will be replaced to a spare one, the Pattern
Check of SSD Check in Self-Diagnostic mode always shows "NG", although the SSD board has no defects.
Even after update of the SSD Board firmware with the update tool, the Pattern Check of SSD Check in Self-
Diagnostic mode will show "NG". This is because for technical reason the update tool needs to erase all data
in the SSD Board before updating the SSD Board firmware.
The reason why this symptom occurs is, because the key data for SSD pattern check in Self-Diagnostic mode
are entered by a different tool in factory side and this key data cannot be restored when replacing SSD Board
or performing the SSD Board firmware update with the update tool.
Therefore, if there is a need to check the SSD by the Self-Diagnostic please check its condition with the R/W
check.
