What I Need to Know
Like all many topics in English, gerund also plays important rules in grammar studies.
It’s important to not overlook certain topics that are important in boosting your knowledge of
English . Gerund is one of those key topics that will appear frequently in both your speaking and
writing. Although it cannot be considered most complex topic, being able to understand the rules
about gerunds and knowing its functions will help you a lot with your writing skills.

2. give the functions of gerund in a sentence; and

3. construct a sentence using gerund.

You have learned the different forms of verbs in your previous lesson. Your knowledge in
the topic will be used in forming a gerund .This module will enhance your skills in using the
present participle of the verb that will act as a noun and functions as gerund.

What’s In
A gerund is usually defined as a word ending in -ing that is formed from a verb and that
functions as a noun specifically used as a subject, a subjective complement, an object of
preposition, a direct object, and an appositive.

Example:

Singing is fun.

 The sentence tells that singing is entertaining.(The function of the underlined word is
noun)
More examples:
o Eating nutritious food help your body to become strong and healthy
o I love cooking my favorite dish

The woman is singing.

 The sentence tells about the action performed by the woman which is singing. .(The
function of the underlined word is verb)

More examples:
o She is eating nutritious food to become strong and healthy
o I am cooking my favorite dish.

I’ve always dreamed about travelling to South America. My parents disapproved of me


quitting my career and have tried to discourage me from leaving. They worry about me finding
another job when I return. However, I believe in following my heart . As soon as my contract
ends I plan on travelling with my sibling Amanda to Argentina. I’m also thinking every morning
about going to Columbia. For now, I’ll concentrate on saving up and try not to complain about
working overtime.
