Welcome to the Reading and Writing Skills for Grade 11 Alternative Delivery Mode
(ADM) Module on Evaluating a Well-Written Text Based on its Properties (organization,
coherence and cohesion, language use and mechanics).
This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators from
public institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in helping the learners meet the
standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming their personal, social, and
economic constraints in schooling.
This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help
learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration their
needs and circumstances.
As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module. You
also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage their
own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist the learners as
they do the tasks included in the module.

(ADM) Module on Evaluating a Well-Written Text Based on its Properties (organization,
coherence and cohesion, language use and mechanics).
Writing is one of the macro skills in English. It is often referred as the most challenging
one but it is also important to develop communication skills that can be used in different
contexts. Through writing, you may be able to express your thoughts, ideas, perceptions
and opinions. Therefore, writing is a very powerful tool. Your success in learning and
developing your writing skills lies in your hands.
This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities for
guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be enabled to
process the contents of the learning resource while being an active learner.
This module will assist you to evaluate a well-written text based on its properties
(organization, coherence and cohesion, language and mechanics).
As a student, learning how to evaluate if a text is well-written shows competence.
So, this lesson is a vital key to become proficient in English communication.
The lessons that you have learned previously will also be helpful in
accomplishing this module. You are expected to honestly read, learn and answer in
order to master the set forth competencies.
It is very important for students to know how to evaluate if the text that they are
writing is well-written or not.
The message of the text will not be conveyed properly if the audience do not
understand it.
So, as a student, mastery of the properties of a well-written text will greatly help
in improving their communication skills.
Read the following statements. Write the letter that corresponds to your
answer in your notebook.
1. How are you going to achieve organization of ideas when writing a text?
A. A paper should be written using Standard English.
B. A writer needs to consider proper word choice.
C. The text should be free of grammatical errors.
D. Each paragraph supports the central idea.
5. Which from the following sentences follows the correct subject and verb agreement?

C. Four gallons of oil was required to fill the tank.

As a writer, you should know the importance of a well-written text because it will
be easier for the readers to understand the message of the text. In this lesson, you will
have a better understanding of the four properties of a well-written text for you to be
able to evaluate if texts are well-written or poorly written.
In the previous lesson, you have learned the properties of a well-written text and
on how you apply them. To test if you master the previous competency, you need to
match the descriptions in column A to the correct property in column B. Write your
answers in your notebook

In the previous lesson, you have learned the four properties of a well-written text:
organization, coherence and cohesion, appropriate language use, and mechanics. On
the other hand, the tips and ways on how to write a well-written text applying and taking
consideration of the properties.
A. Organization
1. Do not ramble – You need to make sure that you have a topic in mind and
input ideas related to the topic but be careful in including so many ideas which
are not organized or all over the place.
2. Be specific – Make sure that your intended readers know what your topic is
from the beginning or first part of the text.
3. Create an Outline – Plan what to write so that you will have a smooth flow of
ideas in your text.
B. Coherence and Cohesion
1. Don’t be redundant – Avoid repeating yourself and writing the same thing over
and over.
2. Be concise – Make sure to be concise with your explanation of the topic.
3. Proper emphasis – Emphasis should be on the right matter. The idea should
be clear in your mind so that you will be able to write it well.
4. Write short sentences – Short sentences are easier to understand. Avoid
complex and compound-complex sentences as much as possible.
C. Appropriate Language Use
1. Use simple words – As a writer, you need to make sure that your readers will
understand the ideas you want to convey. Avoid using hifalutin words to avoid
confusion.
2. Use Active Voice – This follows the sentence patter: subject, verb, and object.
This is much common in English language.
3. Eliminate fluff words – These are words like very, little, and rather. They don’t
add meaning to your sentences.
D. Mechanics
1. Grammatical errors – Always check your paper if it has grammatical errors like
the subject and verb agreement, the correct use of articles, and misplaced and
dangling modifiers.
2. Punctuations on-point – Be sure to use correct punctuations because they
affect the message and content of the text. The meaning may be changed or it
may differ.
3. Correct capitalizations – This should not be neglected because it is important
to capitalize the specific words and first letters of sentences.
4. Check the spelling, numerals, abbreviations, acronyms, and contractions.
Read the sentences carefully. Identify the error by underlining the word/s in each
sentence which makes the sentence erroneous. Then, replace the word/s that make the
sentence incorrect. Rewrite the sentences and write your answer in your notebook.

Read the following sentences which do not follow the properties of a well-written
texts. Eliminate the errors by correcting them. Rewrite the sentences and write your
answer in your notebook.
Read the two given texts below which has the same idea. One is wrongly written
and the other is well-written.
Text A
Mobile games are most popular with teens. When a new mobile game
comes out the app stores are surely busy for downloading. Adults don’t seem to be
interested in spending their time playing but teens sure are. I think the popularity of
these games with teens is due to teenager desires to explore and test their
limitations. Mobile games tests the critical thinking of teens and the way they
strategize with their team mates to beat the opponents and win the game. Last
week, I downloaded Mobile Legends which is very popular nowadays. My friends
are playing this too. I felt stupid because I am on a losing streak and cannot move
to a higher rank. However it exceeded my expectations because I become
engrossed with the game. I understand the thrill and excitement whenever I play
the game. But sometimes I spend too much time in playing.
Text B
