“Researching Mental Health Disorders in the Era of Social Media: Systematic Review”

Authors: Akkapon Wongkoblap, Miguel A. Vadillo, Vasa Curcin

Summary:

Mental illness is quickly becoming one of the most prevalent public health challenges

around the globe. Users may express their feelings, attitudes, and ideas on social media

platforms, which provide a rich supply of data for mental health research, and machine learning

techniques are rapidly being used in this sector. The scope and limits of cutting-edge

methodologies utilized by researchers for predictive analytics in mental health and associated

themes such as ethical considerations were investigated in this study.

According to the findings, little research has employed predictive machine learning

models to detect persons with mental issues in existing social networks. According to the

researchers, treatments might be supplied in the form of advertising, information links, online

counseling, or cognitive behavioral therapy; for example, Facebook is looking at offering real-

time online assistance to persons at risk of suicide. Users should, however, carefully assess the

reliability of the social network data provided and the overall acceptability of such actions.

Despite the expanding number of research that use social network data to explore mental

health concerns, there are still certain prevalent obstacles. It's challenging to create large, high-

quality datasets of social media users with mental disorders because of the biases inherent in

collecting methods and consent management and the selection of appropriate analytics

approaches.
Personal Insights and Reflection:

Social media has taken the globe by storm these days, with people of all ages using it

worldwide. Social media offers benefits and drawbacks when it comes to mental health.

Teenagers nowadays are so attracted to social media that they are willing to sacrifice their sleep.

It has also improved the effectiveness and efficiency of communication, but it has had negative

repercussions on social contact and juvenile social skills.

In recent years, social media has become the most popular platform for social interaction.

Social media has become an essential part of our society as technology evolves. It has both

positive and negative impacts on young individuals. On the other side, social networking sites

have a detrimental influence on teenage mental health since regular use leads to mental illnesses,

including depression, anxiety, and sleep deprivation.

While social media has made us more connected, it has also made us less friendly and

communicative. As a result of excessive use of social networking sites, the quality of

relationships has degraded significantly.
