The unit is designed with a low profile for minimum panel area requirements. Although the KA 134 is styled to harmonize with other AlliedSignal units of the same line, it can be efficiently integrated into any 800 ohm output audio system. ‘As many as three transceivers and five receivers can be controlled with the KA 134. The unit also has three direct and isolated inputs to audio amplifier. The KA 134 can also be used as 2 passenger address, ramp hailer, ‘or intercom if desired ‘Audio is selected by depressing the corresponding selector button. The SPKR switch then routes selected audio tg either the headphones or the cabin speaker, and a BOTH switch is provided to monitor the unselected COMM’s audi. The instrument lighting can be adapted to use either 13.75 or 27.8 volt dimming schemes with only slight changes in the wiring harness. Three 16 ohm transceiver speaker output loading resistors are available. These loads are isolated from the KA 134 and the grounds for the two circuits should be kept separate. Refer to section 1.4.1 for a description of each version. 1.3 TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS SPECIFICATION TSO COMPLIANCE: CONTROLS: PHYSICAL DIMENSIONS: Height width: Depth: (wiconnector) WEIGHT: (includes mtg. rack & cover) POWER REQUIREMENTS: Including instrument lighting FREQUENCY RESPONSE: DISTORTION: INPUTS: AUDIO INPUT IMPEDANCE: CHARACTERISTIC TSO C50b, Class 3 or 4 Env, Cat. Close adherence to these suggestions will assure more Satisfactory performance from the equipment. 2.2 UNPACKING AND INSPECTING EQUIPMENT Unpack the equipment carefully and inspect each item for evidence of damage incurred during shipment. a Gopage elsim’must be filed, save the shipping container and all packing materials to substantiate your claim. Tee aim choulé be filed with the transportation company as soon as possible. The shipping container and packing "material should be saved in any case in the event that storage or reshipment of the equipment 1s necessary, 2.3 EQUIPMENT INSTALLATION “The KA 134 installation will conform to standards designated by the customer, installing agency, and existing Teedhtons as to the nit location and type of installation. The instaling agency will supply and fabricate all conditions aS ae. "The connectors required are supplied by AlliedSignal. "A connector pin function diagram is ipeluded itis manual as Figures 2 Ieerconnect chgrams ere “Included in this manual as Figures 2-5 and 2.3.1 AVIONICS COOLING REQUIREMENTS FOR PANEL MOUNTED EQUIPMENT ‘The most important contribution to improved reliability of avionics equipment is to limit the maximum operating Temperature bf each unit. While modern designs consume less total energy, the Neat dissipated per unit volume Hlatrsieubie inch rematris much the same due to contemporary high density packaging techniques. While each a oot may of may not require forced air cooling, the combined heat generated by several units operating soe evalcal panel or rack can significantly degrade the reliability of the equipment if provisions for adequate Cooling are not incorporated in the initial installation, 2.3.2 MOUNTING RACK AND UNIT INSTALLATION A. The KA 134 is mounted rigidly in the aircraft panel. Select a position in the panel that is not too close Te any high external heat source. Since the KA 134 is shorter than a transceiver, it is normally ve anted st the top of a vertical stack of avionics. Remember to allow adequate space for installation Tpeuhies and connectors. Avoid sharp bends and placing the cables too near the aircraft control cables. Refer to Figure 2-3 for the KA 134 mounting dimensions. Mark and cut the mounting holes. ‘Secure the mounting rack to the instrument panel per Figure 2-3 and 2-4 goe ‘Secure the KA 134 to the mounting rack with the locking screw per Figure 2-3 and 2-4 E. Change the decals to match the function of the switch lif necessary) 2.3.3 CABLE HARNESS AND CONNECTOR ASSEMBLY [A. Fabrication of the External Cable Proceed in accordance with the interconnect diagram (Figures 2-5 and 2-6) that most closely matches ‘the application. NOTE: On all units that have separate grounds, itis recommended that these grounds be carried to 2 Solder tug on the connector mounting tay of the KA 134. All audio grounds should SSiminate there to minimize the possibilty of ground currents being introduced into the ausio system. E Most recently designed transceivers have @ 4 ohm output connection from the amplifier: mest jotor to feed the cockpit speaker. This output must be terminated to 9 tanscewer Speaker load supplied in the KA 134 Rey 2, Jani94 IMKA134R2.SAVIA Page 2-1 AlliedSignal General Aviation Avionics BENDIXIKING KA 134 ‘AUDIO PANEL, B. Contact Terminal Assembly using Molex Crimper (See Figure 2-2) ‘The KA 134 uses 2 Molex connector that mates directly with the printed circuit board inside the unit, Assembly of this connector is as follows: 1. Strip each wire §/32° for contact terminal, PIN 030:01107-OOXX. Note: The last two digits of the part number indicates the number of terminals required. 2. Open the Molex HT 1921 hand crimper with the engraved side toward the operator. Place the ‘conductor tab section of a contact terminal on Anvil A with the contact portion facing away trom the operator. Close the crimper slightly until the contact tabs touch the female jaw. 3. Insert the stripped conductor until the insulation is even with the side of the crimper facing the operator. Crimp the conductor tabs by squeezing the handles together until the jaws are fully closed oF a Sufficient crimp is obtained, 4. Move the lead to Anvil A. Place the insulating tab section on Anvil A. Crimp again until the jaws ‘are fully closed or until a Sufficient crimp is obtained. C. Contact Insertion into Molex Connector Housing After the contact terminals have been installed on the wiring hamess, the contact terminals can be inserted into the proper location in the connector housing (PIN 030-01084-0054). The terminal cannot be inserted upside down. Be sure {0 push the terminal all the way in until a click can be felt or heard. ‘The sellocking feature can be tested by gently pulling on the wire. 1. All control Switching is accomplished with 10 color coded push buttons. Audio volume levels are controlled individually st each source, The three yellow buttons on the left of the panel under the word MIC are the microphone select switches. ‘These buttons are interlocked so only one can be depressed at a time. Two of these buttons, marked COMM 1 and COMM 2, select the active VHF transceiver. When depressed, microphone audio and keying information will be routed to the selected VHF transmitter and the received audio to the KA 134, The third button of this group ccan be programmed in several ways. It can be used as a passenger address, ramp hailer, intercom, of for a third transceiver (HF, VHF The white button, fourth trom the left, is marked BOTH. It allows the audio of the unselected COMM 1 or COMM 2 to be routed to the KA 134. NOTE: If a third transceiver is used and its received audio is desired when it is the unselected transceiver, ‘then the third receiver's audio must be connected ta one of the other separate audio inputs, ‘The next five consecutive white buttons are the receiver audio select switches. To select a specific source, depress the corresponding button, ‘The last button is the SPKR switch. If it is depressed, the audio is heard over the cabin speaker. If the button is not depressed, audio is routed to the headphones. Thé SPKA button is colored yellow. Some audio sources may be wited directly to the isolation amplifier. These sources, such as radar altimeter audio or the fing signal from a AlliedSignal phone, will be present always at the cabin speaker regardless of the osition of the SPKA switch When the microphone switch is keyed, the cabin speaker will be muted to prevent feedback within the system A side tone is possible in the passenger address or ramp hailer modes I desired LOCKING SCREW- OME} [xR] [sexe] | eno ka 13a) FIGURE 3-1 KA 134 CONTROL FUNCTIONS Rev 2, Jan/o4 IMKAI3¢R2, SAVJA Page 3-1 AlliedSignal General Aviation Avionics BENDIX/KING KA 134 "AUDIO PANEL SECTION IV THEORY OF OPERATION 4.1 GENERAL ‘The KA 134, PIN 071-2009-00/01 versions can be thought of as containing three basic sections: audio Switching circuits, isolation amplifier, and power supply. The P/N 07 1-2009-02/03/12 versions do not require 8 Power supply section. 4.1.1 AUDIO SWITCHING ‘The pushbuttons on the front of the KA 134 control the audio routing. These switches select the desired audio input and where the audio output will be routed. If the SPKR switch is not depressea, the audio sources will be tied directly to the headphones. Therefore, even if the isolation amplifier was to malfunction, audio would be available. This also means that if one of the sources were to malfunction, no audio would be detected on the headphone. To correct this situation, the malfunctioning audio output must be switched off. The isolation amplifier would isolate @ faulty source in the SPKR position. 4.1.2 ISOLATION AMPLIFIER, ‘The isolation amplifier consists of 1101, a high power audio amplifier integrated circuit. The amplifier is short cuit protected. Input isolation is provided by the voltage divider R101 and U101.” Overal volume is set by 4.1.3 POWER SUPPLY The KA 134, P/N 071-2009-00/01 versions have the power supply bypassed for use in the 13.75VDC made to unsure the highest possible voltage supply to the audio amplifier. In the 27.5VDC mode, a series pass regulator is used to limit V+ to 22VDC. The KA 134, PIN 07 1-2009-02/03/12 versions operate from either 13.7 8VOC. (or 27VOC and no internat series pass preregulator is required for the 27.SVOC input. 4.2 BLOCK DIAGRAM The block diagram, Figure 4-1, shows the major divisions of the KA 134. Included in each block is the designator of the component(s) major to the functions of the block. 4.3 DETAILED CIRCUIT THEORY 4.3.1 SWITCHING MATRIX The switching matrix, consisting of $101 through $108, contro! the MIC audio and transmitter keying, isolation muting, and select audio to be channeled to the headphones or isolation amplifier. 4.3.2 ISOLATION AMPLIFIER ‘The audio selected in the switching matiix plus audio from the direct inputs are isolated 40dB from each other in ‘the restrictive divider U101 and R101. The level of the audio into the power amplifier is set by R104. After the audio Is amplified by IT, itis then channeled to the terminals of S101 where it can be fed to either of wo ‘output speakers, 4.3.3 MUTING ‘Muting is accomplished by the diode switch CR103, which is forward biased when the mic Key line is grounded. ‘This opens diodes CR1O1 and CR102 and connects the input of the audio amplifier to AC ground through 1Kohm resistor, R105. 4.3.4 PASSENGER ADDRESS (PA) MODE The bias for the PA mic is obtained from the 1OV regulator 1102. When the KA 134 is in the PA mode and the microphone is keyed, the selected audio and direct audio are muted and the audio from the microphone is routed to the amplifier. The output of the amplifier is connected to the PA speaker. 4.3.8 PASIDETONE ‘The output of the amplifier may be externally connected to give a headphone sidetone when in the PA position.
