GENERAL INFORMATION 4.1 INTRODUCTION This manual contains information relative to the physical, mechanical, and electrical characteristics of the KA 120 DME/GS Serial to Parallel Code Converter. Installation and operating procedures are also included. Information relative to the maintenance, alignment, and procurement of replacement parts may be found in the KA 120 Maintenance/Overhaul Illustrated Parts List. 1.2 EQUIPMENT DESCRIPTION The KA 120 DME/GS Serial to Parallel code converter is a code conversion unit which accepts serial tuning information from one or two navigation receivers and generates two sets of parallel information. One set of parallel tuning information is for the DME and one set for the Glideslope. The possible code formats are ARINC 2/5 or Bendix/King Slip for DME and Bendix/King 4x5 (Bendix/King Code) or ARINC 2x5 for Glideslope. Either parallel output can be tuned from either serial input or both outputs can be tuned from the same input. Both parallel outputs can be placed in a high impedance state for paralleling with other control heads. The KA 120 provides a hold function which latches DME Parallel information. If DME tuning information is lost while in the hold mode, a re-channeling warning light will indicate a loss of memory. The KA 120 will operate from either 14 VDC or 28 VDC. 1.3 TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS SPECIFICATION CHARACTERISTIC. Revision 1, Aug. 1996 MMKA120R1.ZIP Page 3-1 BENDIX/KING KA 120 DME/GS SERIAL TO PARALLEL CODE CONVERTER ) SECTION IV THEORY OF OPERATION This section contains the Detailed Theory of Operation for the KA 120. The Detailed Theory discusses the circuit operation of the unit in detail. Information on alignment and troubleshooting can be found in Section V of this manual. 4.2 DETAILED CIRCUIT THEORY The microprocessor incorporates 1K bytes of programmed read only memory (ROM). The internal clock of the microprocessor is derived from the external 10.95MHz crystal (¥1), which is connected to the internal oscillator through pins 2 and 3. FIGURE 4-1 BASIC BLOCK DIAGRAM Revision 1, Aug. 1996 MMKA120R1.ZIP Page 4-1 BENDIX/KING KA 120 DME/GS SERIAL TO PARALLEL CODE CONVERTER On power-up, pin 4 of the microprocessor goes to +5V which causes a reset and all internal random access memory (RAM) is cleared. If the hold function is active, (SV on pin 32 of I6), when a microprocessor reset occurs, the RAM is cleared and the frequency being held is lost. Under these conditions the rechnannel warning output (pin 33 of 16) will toggle at a one second rate to indicate a Toss of memory. Once the hold function is removed by selecting either NAV T or NAN 2, the rechannel warning output will cease to toggle. ‘Two separate RNAV ROST pulses, which are generated by the microprocessor at pins 30 and 31, are buffered and inverted by Q1 and Q4 and sent to two separate navigational receivers. The RNAV RQST pulse out of the microprocessor is high for 45ms (+20%) and low for 160ms (+ 20%). When in the high state the voltage at the microprocessor will be 5V (+ 5%) and OV (+.45V, -OV) when in the low state. Once the 10 bits of serial data is received from NAV 1 or NAV 2, the microprocessor checks the new data for a valid NAV channel. If the new data is invalid, the microprocessor will continuously toggle the parallel outputs from 110.00MHz to 117.00MHz at a one second rate until new valid data is received, If the new data is valid, the microprocessor checks the source select switches, DME 1/2 and GS 1/2, to decide which outputs will receive the new data. When GS 1/2, pin 17 of the microprocessor, is at 5V, the Glideslope will receive information from NAV 1, and when pin 17 is at OV the information will come from NAV 2. If the new input goes to the Glideslope, the data is checked for an ILS channel. If the new Glideslope data is an ILS channel, the ILS line, pin 3 of 1202, will go low. ‘When pin 16 of the microprocessor (DME SEL 1/2) is at SV, the DME will receive serial information from NAV 1. If pin 16 is at OV, the DME will receive serial information from NAV 2, When the new data goes to the DME, the microprocessor will read the DME HOLD switch, pin 32 of the microprocessor, to determine if the DME parallel outputs are to remain the same, or be changed to the new channel. If the hold function is active, (pin 32 of the microprocessor is at 5V), the microprocessor will not calculate the new DME code, but will continue on and calculate the new Glideslope code. ‘When the hold function is not active, pin 32 of the microprocessor is at OV, the microprocessor will first calculate the DME output code and then calculate the Glideslope output code. To determine which code is to be calculated for the DME and Glideslope, the microprocessor reads the code select lines. Code A, pin 12 on the microprocessor, is used to determine which code is to be outputted to the DME, and codes B, C and D, pins 13, 14 and 15 of the microprocessor, are reserved for future use. If code A is at a 5V level, ARINC 2/5 will be calculated, and when pin 12 is at OV, Bendix/King Slip Code will be calculated. Once the parallel output codes have been caloulated, the microprocessor reads the DME common and Glideslope Common input lines, pins 18 and 19 of the microprocessor, to determine if the KA 120 is the active tuning source. If pins 18 or 19 of the microprocessor is at OV, then the KA 120 is not the active tuning source for either the DME or the Glideslope. The microprocessor will then ‘output a high impedance state to either the DME or Glideslope or both depending upon which output is not active. If the KA 120 is the active tuning source, the microprocessor will output the calculated parallel code. The channeling information, which is to be outputted, is sent out of the microprocessor on the serial data bus. The serial data bus consist of three lines: Clock, pin 28; Data, pin 27; and Strobe, pin 29. The serial shift register, 14, IS, I7 and I8 receives the serial data on each rising edge Revision 1, Aug. 1996 Page 4-2 MMKA120R1.ZIP BENDIX/KING KA 120 DME/GS SERIAL TO PARALLEL CODE CONVERTER of the clock. After 32 clock cycles a strobe pulse occurs which latches the serial data into the shift register. Once the serial data is latched, the parallel channeling information is then buffered and sent to the remote DME and Glideslope. ‘watchdog’ circuit is used to monitor the serial data output. In the event that the microprocessor would "get lost” in the execution of the program, the serial data would stop and C16 would then ‘charge up to +3.5V causing a negative output on 13. This would then generate a microprocessor reset to re—initialize the program. The power supply can operate from supply voltages of 11V to 33VDC. The output of the power supply consists of two voltages, +10V and +5VDC. The SV output is regulated by 12. The 10V output is controlled by a pass regulator, transistors Q3 and Q41. 40 provides a constant current source for an 11V Zener diode. The 11V Zener diode, CR8, provides a constant voltage reference to the base of the pass regulator which controls the 10V output. Ifthe 10V output line should drop below BV, pin 2 of I3 will go low and cause a microprocessor reset. The reset line will stay low until the 10V line returns to 8.5V where upon the reset line will go high. The IPL also provides for the proper identification of replacement parts. Individual Bills of Material (BOM) within this IPL are arranged in numerical sequence starting with the top assembly and continuing with the sub-assemblies. All mechanical parts will be separated from the electrical parts used on the sub-assembly. Each BOM is followed by the Assembly Drawing and Schematic Diagram for that assembly. Parts identified in this IPL by Bendix/King Part Number meet design specifications for this equipment and are the recommended replacement parts. Warranty information concerning AlliedSignal replacement parts is contained in Service Memo #1, KPN 600-08001-O0XX. This section describes the various items that appear on the Bills of Material. A sample BOM is included in this section as Figure 6-1. A. BOM Number ‘The Bill of Material Number appears at the top of the BOM as a 9-digit number which is also the AlliedSignal Part Number for the assembly. The BOM Number is followed by the assembly description and the revision level of the BOM. B. Symbol Column This column contains the Reference Designators of the electrical components of the assembly. Mechanical parts are not assigned Reference Designators. The Reference Designator consists of a letter abbreviation which indicates the type of component followed by the number assigned to that part (C101, Q101, etc). If the P/N and description reads "200-OXXXX-0099 COMMON BOM" or "200-XXXX-99 COMMON BOM” the parts for that assembly are included in the same BOM. The parts breakdown for an assembly with any other P/N will be found in the BOM with the same number. F_ Unit of Measure (UM) Column This column indicates the Unit of Measure for each part. Common abbreviations found in this column are listed below. Bag Each RE For Reference only Foot IN neh) As Required G. Quantity and Flavor Columns Individual flavors of an assembly are identified by the last four digits of the P/N. Part quantities for each flavor will be indicated under headings numbered 0000 through 9900 as. required. The parts indicated in the 9800 Column are common to all other flavors of the assembly and are considered the Common Bill of Material for the assembly. H. Software Documentation ‘The documentation of software involves the use of several unique types of part numbers. ‘The following subsections list these part numbers with their description. In some cases, some. specific versions of hardware must be used with specific versions of software. Refer to Appendix S to determine the correct P/N for ordering the correct programmed device. You will need to know the part number of and the software revision level of the unit. Appendix S contains block diagrams for documented software/hardware configurations. The unit designator and part numbers are listed in the top box. One level down from that is a box for the 206-type system software BOM number and boxes for the BOM numbers for all other hardware assemblies that do not contain any software. The next level are boxes containing 205-type BOM's for assemblies which use software under the system software box. Below these top BOM boxes are two boxes. One box shows the hardware BOM number and the other contains a list of circuit designators and part numbers of individual integrated circuits used on the circuit board. The hardware/software configuration diagrams in Appendix S provide a method to coordinate hardware with software versions and revision levels. The last two digits of all software related P/N’s, designated in the following text as -RN, indicate the revision number or level of the related software. This number is incremented with each revision of software. For example, -01 is revision 0, ~02is revision 1, and so on. When ordering specific integrated circuits or devices, the applicable 122-XXXXX-XXRN P/N is used. When ordering a circuit board which contains software, the applicable 205X-XXXX-XXRN P/N is used. Applicable assembly drawings and schematic diagrams will then follow in order. (1) General Information Revision 1, Aug. 1996 MMKA120R1.ZIP Page 6-3 BENDIX/KING KA 120 DME/GS SERIAL TO PARALLEL CODE CONVERTER ‘The part number of the unit, typically the 065-, 066- or 071-top assembly part number, contains a 206- item in its bill of materials. This 206- item is the configuration control mechanism for programmable electronic devices of the unit. ‘Two different means exist to label the hardware/software configuration of the unit depending on the the part number of the unit: (2) When the part number of the unit is a 9-digit part as represented on the TSO label, the last 2 digits of the 206-item are the digits of the SOFTware IDentification tag that appears on the unit. (b) When the part number of the unit is a 12-digit part as represented on the TSO label, the last 4 digits of the 206- item are the digits of the SOFTware MODification tag that appears on the unit. In the example shown on page 7, the 206- item is flagged with an "A" in the right hand margin. (2) Definition of a Hardware/Software System The 206- item represents the collection of all boards in the unit which contain electronic programmable devices (software). The hardware/software system (206-) bill of materials contains two categories of items: (2) The part number of the unit label,i.e. the SOFT ID or SOFT MOD tag. 1) Inthe case of the 9-
