Last week, there was one really, really bad day. It was Monday. Usually, there are
about 25 students in my class, but that day, there were only 5
people! It wasn't warm. In fact, it was really cold. It was raining a
lot. It was dark and gray outside. There wasn't any sunshine. I think
the students weren't at school because they were sick. They were
at home. Maybe they were in bed. Mr. Jibbit is our teacher. He is
always at school. He is never at home on a Monday. Last Monday
was no different. He was not in bed. He was in the classroom, and he was cold! Why
was he so cold? That's a very good question. He was cold because the heater in the
school was broken. It was freezing. The school was like a refrigerator. Our room was
like a freezer! And poor Mr. Jibbit was like ice! The small class was cold, cold, cold! The
next days were much warmer. The heater was fixed on Tuesday, so everything was ok.
There were 25 students, not only 5. But where was Mr. Jibbit? He wasn't there. He was
at home, sick in bed

What is bullying?
Bullying can happen at school, at home or
online. It is never okay and it is not a
normal part of growing up.

Bullying is an ongoing and deliberate

misuse of power in relationships through
repeated verbal, physical and/or social
behaviour that intends to cause physical,
social and/or psychological harm. It can
involve an individual or a group misusing
their power, or perceived power, over one
or more persons who feel unable to stop it from happening.

Bullying can happen in person or online, via various digital platforms and devices and it
can be obvious (overt) or hidden (covert). Bullying behaviour is repeated, or has the
potential to be repeated, over time (for example, through sharing of digital records).

Bullying of any form or for any reason can have immediate, medium and long-term
effects on those involved, including bystanders. Single incidents and conflict or fights
between equals, whether in person or online, are not defined as bullying.

The 3 main features of bullying are:

 the misuse of power in a relationship

 it is ongoing and repeated
 it involves behaviours that can cause harm.

Four Types of bullying behaviour

There are three four main types of bullying behaviour:

 Physical - examples include: hitting, pushing, shoving or intimidating or otherwise
physically hurting another person, damaging or stealing their belongings. It includes
threats of violence
 Verbal/written - examples include: name-calling or insulting someone about an
attribute, quality or personal characteristic
 Social (sometimes called relational or emotional bullying)  – examples include:
deliberately excluding someone, spreading rumours, sharing information that will have
a harmful effect on the other person and/or damaging a person’s social reputation or
social acceptance
 Cyberbullying - any form of bullying behaviour that occurs online or via a mobile
device. It can be verbal or written, and can include threats of violence as well as
images, videos and/or audio. For more information, see: Cyberbullying.

Where and When Bullying Happens

Bullying can occur during or after school hours. While most reported bullying happens
in the school building, a significant percentage also happens in places like on the
playground or the bus. It can also happen travelling to or from school, in the youth’s
neighborhood, or on the Internet.

Task 4

1. Read the text and be ready to talk about the most relevant informaion in the article.
2. Decide if the situations (1–4) are examples of a joke in bad taste or of bullying.
Explain why.

According to the article …

1. there is more / less bullying in schools than before.
2. cyberbullies use / don’t use modern technology to bully people.
Bullying at Schools is on the Increase
Final task
Bullying is a problem that is on the increase in schools. In general, bullies
are aggressive, physically and verbally abusive and offensive to their victims.
At school, they usually call defenceless students horrible, rude names, they
take their things without permission, and leave offensive messages on their
desks. But one particular area of bullying that is seriously out of control
is cyberbullying. Bullies use social media and messaging apps to offend
masses of students with one push of a button!
If you want to stop bullying, it’s very important to stay calm and not respond
with violence. Also, be careful about the information you share on social media,
and don’t do things you aren’t comfortable with or don’t agree with.

Final task
Select a person you admire and write about him/her. Take into account the following items.

Directions: your paper should be just one page abd add some pictures for supporting your
