A.

Answer the following questions

You can use a dictionary (ex : wordreference) to understand the questions and the vocabulary.

Engine lubrication

1. List the different components (or parts) of the oil circuit.

The camshaft, the vacuum pump, the hydraulic bucket-type tappets, the oil pressure control valve,
the oil pressure switch, the short circuit valve, the oil return cut-off valve, the oil filter, the oil
cooler, the oil pump, the pressure relief valve, the exhaust gas turbocharger.

2. How is the oil pressure valve installed ? What is the consequence ?

The oil pressure control valve is installed downstream of the oil filter. So, there
is only one oil pressure switch.

3. How is the oil pump driven ?

It is driven by the crankshaft by means of a chain.

4. Explain what a chain tensioner is.

It is a chain that is tensioned by means of a spring-loaded sliding block

5. Rephrase (= reformuler) the 3 advantages of the oil pump.

• The gear intermeshing zone is smaller, which reduces friction
• The operating area is larger which allows higher suction capacity
• There are fewer moving parts.

Engine cooling

1. List the different components (or parts) of the cooling circuit.

Heat exchanger, throttle valve control unit, pressure equilisation tank, oil cooler, cooler, thermostat,
coolant pump.

2. Where is the coolant pump and how is it driven ?

It is installed in the cylinder block. It is driven by the rib belt.

3. What are the advantages of having a plastic pump gear ?

It has fewer components and weights less (is less heavy).

4. Where is the coolant thermostat ? Why is it an advantage ?

It is integrated in the cylinder block. This eliminates the need for a housing and saves
weight.

B. Choose 1 of the 2 circuits and record an oral presentation of your circuit. Send it to Miss Lisiecki
and M. Le Bihan
