CIE Test-I (Online SET-B)

Course: Strength of Materials Duration: 8:00 AM – 9:15 AM (75 Min)

Course code: 19CV3PCSOM Maximum marks: 40
Semester: III Date: 04.09.2020

Instructions: Answer all the questions

1. Explain the ductile behavior of steel with a neat sketch, indicating salient
features. (5 marks)

2. A compound bar is having copper tube of external diameter 70 mm and

internal diameter 60 mm inside which there is a steel tube of external diameter
60 mm and internal diameter 50mm. A steel bolt of 25 mm diameter is inserted
through the steel tube. Assuming the length of composite section as 1 m and
the system to be stress free initially, find the stresses in each of the material
when nut is moved through a distance of 2 mm. Assume Es = 200GPa and Ec =
100GPa.
(10
marks)

3. A bar of steel and a bar of copper both of same length of 1m, have their ends
firmly jointed together so as to form a compound bar. The cross-sectional area
of steel and copper bars is 1200 mm2 and 1000 mm2 respectively. Find the
stresses in each bar when the temperature of the unit is raised by 100 0C. find
also the increase in length of the compound bar and what axial force must be
applied to prevent this increase in length? (10 marks)
Es=200GPa, Ec=112GPa, αs=12x10 / C and αc =18.5x10 / C

4. A cantilever beam is loaded as shown in the figure. Draw Shear Force and
Bending Moment indicating all salient features. (15 marks)
