How to Build a Bug Out Bag
You may have heard of something called a bug out bag or “bob”
but aren’t sure exactly what it is or why you’d need one. In short,
a bug out bag is an emergency kit that you can keep stocked and
grab it if you must escape a situation quickly. These are good for
natural disasters, civil unrest and general preparedness.

Why a Bug Out Bag?

Recently during the Covid-19 and civil unrest, we’ve seen some
surprising examples of why being prepared is a good thing. You
don’t know when an earthquake, wildfire or riot may interrupt your
life.

In those times, you won’t have the luxury of being able to pack a
bag for your family. Instead, you need a ready to go solution.
Here we see the importance of the bug out bag.

It’ll be much better to have a premade bag ready to go with

supplies like food, water and extra clothing for an emergency
situation. Chances are you had an emergency bag for your trip to
the hospital when your kids were born. The same thinking applies
here.

What is this Thing for?

When you’re building an emergency kit like this you need to think
about the essential items you’ll need. Below we’ll go over a great
list of essentials and options. But for now, think about what
emergency you might encounter and what solutions you’ll need to
the problems this emergency will cause.
For all emergencies food, water, first aid, tools, rain gear and
cash are a must. Don’t underestimate the power of cash. Money
solves problems. Carry a good amount in small bills so you have
more options to negotiate.

Considerations
If you have a family member that requires critical medication,
make sure that you have some in your bag ready to go. Other
medications like pain reliever and stomach medicine are a good
idea too.

Also consider what you really need. You can spend all day
preparing what will fill your bag, but you need to be nimble. And
get pouches to hold things like medicine and cables. In a hurry
you want to reach in and get what you need quickly. Don’t just
dump this stuff in and go, organize it for when seconds count. If
you don’t have a budget for pouches, start with zip tight sandwich
bags.

There’s a balance that needs to be achieved to be useful and

mobile.

Trust me, you can get carried away with what you have with you.
Do you really need 6 rain ponchos for 4 people? Do you need a
HDMI cable? Probably not. Let’s keep it simple.

BLUF
Remember the point of a bug out bag is to have the essential
necessities to survive a catastrophic event. No, you can’t plan for
everything so we need to focus our efforts on what we can use
the most without weighing us down.
Below is a cultivated list of bug out bag items curated by me and
a friend. My friend’s level of expertise and experience far exceed
mine. Between the two of us this is a rock-solid list to get you
