Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT)

Professional Therapies in Blacksburg is proud to now offer Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT) for patients who suffer with symptoms of dysequilibrium and dizziness associated with a vestibular pathology. VRT is an alternative research-based treatment involving specific exercises to eliminate or significantly reduce signs and symptoms by promoting central nervous system compensation for inner ear deficits. The end results can alleviate both primary and secondary signs and symptoms of vestibular disorders. VRT can improve the quality of life for patients who suffer with vestibular problems such as labyrinthitis, vestibular neuritis, Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), unilateral and/or bilateral vestibular hypofunction and vestibular degeneration which is often referred to as dysequilibrium of the aging. The goals of our exercise-based program include: decreasing dizziness and visual challenges, improving balance and walking function, and increasing overall activity levels that carry over into everyday life activities. If you feel you might benefit from our vestibular rehabilitation program, please talk to your primary care provider or call our office at 961-1230 for more information. VRT is also offered in the Third Street, Lancerlot, and Daleville offices. For therapists interested in receiving training for gait stabilization and balance, please contact Pam Yates or Virginia Pollard at our Third Street office.

CELEBRATE COMMUNICATION!
For over 75 years, May has been designated as Better Speech and Hearing month. This is a time to raise public awareness and understanding of the variety of communication difficulties that people in our society face. The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders reports that approximately 43,000,000 people in the United States suffer from a speech, voice, language, or hearing impairment. Almost 28,000,000 suffer from a hearing loss. Approximately 10 percent of children have moderate to severe communication impairments, including speech production/articulation, stuttering, and language-learning difficulties. Approximately 1,000,000 people in the United States have aphasia a language disorder resulting from brain damage caused by a stroke. Speech-Language Pathology (SpeechLanguage Pathologists) and Audiology (Audiologists) are the professions concerned with the prevention, identification, and treatment of communication impairments. After earning a masters degree, passing a national examination, and serving a nine month clinical internship, these professionals are eligible for certification, in the form of the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC), from the American SpeechLanguage-Hearing Association. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact one of our offices for more information.

Healthy Recipe of the Month: Cannoli Stuffed French Toast Nuggets

3 tbsp. fat-free ricotta cheese 2 tsp. mini semi-sweet chocolate chips 1 tsp. vanilla extract, divided 1 no-calorie sweetener packet (like Splenda or Truvia) 1 light hot dog bun with about 80 calories (like the kind by Sara Lee) 1/4 cup fat-free liquid egg substitute (like Egg Beaters Original) 1/4 tsp. cinnamon 2 tsp. light whipped/light butter 1/2 tsp. powdered sugar In a small bowl, combine ricotta cheese, chocolate chips, 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract, and sweetener, and mix well. Split hot dog bun open lengthwise, without fully separating the two halves. Spoon ricotta mixture onto the bottom half of the bun. Gently press the top half down over the filling. Carefully slice into four "nuggets" and set aside. Mix egg substitute, cinnamon, and remaining 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract in a small bowl. Set aside. Bring a skillet sprayed with nonstick spray to medium-high heat on the stove. Add butter and allow to coat the bottom of the skillet. Meanwhile, coat each nugget on all sides with the egg mixture. (You won't need to use all of the egg mixture.) Once butter has melted, place nuggets in the skillet and, flipping occasionally, cook until golden brown on all sides, 3 - 4 minutes. Plate your nuggets and sprinkle with powdered sugar. Top with syrup, if you like. Enjoy!

The Blacksburg clinic is excited to announce that it will be offering a chair yoga class. You can enliven your life with improved energy, posture, and sense of well being by coming to this adapted yoga class done entirely from a chair level. Whether you are wheel chair mobilized, or have balance, endurance, or range of motion limitations that make you wary of the more traditional yoga classes, come try this new class that is designed to meet the needs of the rest of us. We will use breathing and movement techniques designed to slowly increase the challenge and rewards for the group, as we become more comfortable within our bodies, learn methods for total body relaxation, and gain flexibility and strength. Classes will be taught by Suzanne Glasson, RN, OTR/L on Fridays from 10:30 to 11:30 at the Blacksburg clinic. Fee is $12 per class or $60 for 6 classes. Must have at least 6 participants. Space is limited! Call 961-1230 for more information or to reserve a spot. Classes will be starting in June!

Inside Story Headline

This story can fit 150-200 words. One benefit of using your newsletter as a promotional tool is that you can reuse content from other marketing materials, such as press releases, market studies, and reports. While your main goal of distributing a newsletter might be to sell your product or service, the key to a successful newsletter is making it useful to your readers. A great way to add useful content to your newsletter is to develop and write your own articles, or include a calendar of upcoming events or a special offer that promotes a new product. You can also research articles or find filler articles by accessing the World Wide Web. You can write about a variety of topics but try to keep your articles short. Much of the content you put in your newsletter can also be used for your Web site. Microsoft Publisher offers a simple way to convert your newsletter to a Web publication. So, when youre finished writing your newsletter, convert it to a Web site and post it.

This story can fit 100-150 words. The subject matter that appears in newsletters is virtually endless. You can include stories that focus on current technologies or innovations in your field. You may also want to note business or economic trends, or make predictions for your customers or clients. If the newsletter is distributed internally, you might comment upon new procedures or improvements to the business. Sales figures or earnings will show how your business is growing. Some newsletters include a column that is updated every issue, for instance, an advice column, a book review, a letter from the president, or an editorial. You can also profile new employees or top customers or vendors.

Organization

This would be a good place to insert a short paragraph about your organization. It might include the purpose of the organization, its mission, founding date, and a brief history. You could also include a brief list of the types of products, services, or programs your organization offers, the geographic area covered (for example, western U.S. or European markets), and a profile of the types of customers or members served. It would also be useful to include a contact name for readers who want more information about the organization.

Back Page Story Headline

This story can fit 175-225 words. If your newsletter is folded and mailed, this story will appear on the back. So, its a good idea to make it easy to read at a glance. A question and answer session is a good way to quickly capture the attention of readers. You can either compile questions that youve received since the last edition or you can summarize some generic questions that are frequently asked about your organization. A listing of names and titles of managers in your organization is a good way to give your newsletter a personal touch. If your organization is small, you may want to list the names of all employees. If you have any prices of standard products or services, you can include a listing of those here. You may want to refer your readers to any other forms of communication that youve created for your organization. You can also use this space to remind readers to mark their calendars for a regular event, such as a breakfast meeting for vendors every third Tuesday of the month, or a biannual charity auction. If space is available, this is a good place to insert a clip art image or some other graphic.
