Before beginning his la, you should: Know the basic operations of NMOS transistor © Know how to ase LTapicesimulitor ‘ter completing this ab, you should beable ta: + Be able to perform OC analysis of two cuits: (1) an NMOS Biased in the saturation fegion, and (2) an NMOS based Inthe tiade region. Re able to compare the results with the paper analysis. 1 implementing the circus in an experimental setting, taking measurements, and comparing their performance 10 ‘theoretieal and simulated results This lab is related to section 5.3 of the textbook, and there is a solved example similar to this ia your text book. ; PART 1: DESIGN AND ANALYSIS ry Consider the circuit shown in Figure 1: cH R, Ry i Rs Y y Vv: FIGURE 1: NMOS-based circuit for saturation- ad trode mode operation. Related to Fig. 5.24 in as We'd like to Design the circuit in Figure 1 such that lo = 1 mA, Vg = 0 V, and Vo = #5 V. 4 Use supplies of V asv. Spice model of both NMOS and PMOS are provided in a text file. You need to make sure that proper type of device (NMOS) is used for this experiment. ‘© Sketch the circuit in your tab book, clearly labeling the transistor’s three terminals. ‘+ We'd like to bias the transistor in the saturation region. Based on the specifications given in the previous page, and referring to Table 5.1 of text book, calculate Vov. ‘+ From the detailed spice model datasheet, find the nominal value of the threshold voltage of the transistor. The transistors in this experiment is ALD ALD1101 (NMOS). © (Note: The spice model may use a different symbol, eg., Vow) (© (Note: The spice model can include a range of values for threshold voltage that ‘you will ind among the batch of transistors. Use the “nominal” value in your cakulations. ‘* What is ves? + Whatis vs? LAB EXPERIMENT ‘+ Continuing with the hand calculations, you now have enough information to calculate Re ‘+ You also have enough information to calculate Ro. ‘* What values of R: and Ri do you need to use? ‘© Using LTspice simulate the circuit given in Figure 1 using the values you calculated. Use the resistor values you obtained previously. Report the values of Vs. Vo, Vs, and Io: ‘+ How closely do they match your calculations? (Remember: The simulator has its own, ‘more complex model of the real transistor, so there can be some small variations.) IPART 2: NMOS IN TRIODE MODE! Redesign the circuit in Figure 1 such that lo= 1 mA, Vo = +42 V, and Vos = 0.5 V. Use supplies of V- =-V.= 15 V. Note that you must use the triode model for the transistor equations from Table 5.1 of your text book. ‘+ Sketch the circuit in your lab book, clearly labeling the transistor’s three terminals. ‘+ Based on the specifications, hand calculate Vo, and Ves. © What is Vc? * You now have enough information to calculate Rs. * You also have enough information to calculate RD. © What values of R: and R: do you need to use? * Simulate your circuit using the values of Rs, Ro, Rs, and Ry based on your calculations. ‘+ Report the values of Vs, Vo, Vc, and lo * How closely do they match your calculations?
