16-00 Immobiliser and anti-theft protection

Function
The starter lock is intended to prevent unauthorised persons from being able to start the
vehicle. This is done via the communication between the different components in the
vehicle, starter key, transceiver, coordinator and engine control unit.
There are two different designs of immobiliser:
Without transponder starter key
Encrypted information is sent via the CAN bus between the coordinator and engine
control unit. If all requirements in the information are fulfilled, the engine control unit
will allow the engine to start.
If one or more requirements are not met, the following occurs:
• Fault code is activated.
• Engine start is prevented.
• A warning lamp in the instrument cluster come on.
With transponder starter key
Before validation between the coordinator and engine control unit, the transponder starter
key communicates with the transceiver on the starter lock. Encrypted information is then
exchanged between the transponder starter key and the coordinator before information is
sent via the CAN bus to the engine control unit.
Locking control units
In order to protect parameter settings and security-related functionality, several of the
control units are locked with a PIN and encryption code. The codes are included with the
starter keys. Locked control units must therefore be unlocked before spare parts
programming or software updates can be carried out.
All vehicles are equipped with codes regardless of whether they have a transponder or not.

The coordinator and the control units for the engine management system, the alarm
system and the door control system are locked with these encryption codes unique to the
vehicle.

If a functioning control unit is to be renewed or moved to another vehicle, it must always

be unlocked with the encryption code and PIN code before it is removed from the vehicle.
This is done via SDP3.

If the control units are locked with different codes, system functionality is limited. If a
control unit is unlocked, a fault code is activated. The fault code becomes inactive when
the control unit goes back into locked mode.
For all vehicles it is possible to carry out timed unlocking as an emergency function if the
system PIN code has been misplaced. Completed timed unlocking means that you can
unlock the control units even without a PIN code. A condition for timed unlocking to
occur is that the control units must be locked to the vehicle concerned. Timed unlocking
takes 12 hours and while it is running, the 15 voltage must be switched on.
Scania Helpdesk can help you obtain the vehicle encryption code and PIN code, if valid
ownership documents for the vehicle are shown. New codes are also sent when ordering
new locks and keys.
Keys
New keys with transponders must be programmed using SDP3 in order to be used in
parallel with already existing ones. To do this, you need to the vehicle PIN code. A
programmed key cannot be reprogrammed.
