A question to ponder: What is the core trait of a skillful writer or a talented storyteller? ‘The

selection of words’, Isn’t that so? Words are of paramount importance when opting for both

verbal communication or written information of any sort. To explicate your thoughts to the

audience, one has to be crystal clear about the ideas and emotions they put in in their work of art

to offer a relatable sight to people’s psyche.

The selection of the barrier; if poor vocabulary hinders effective communication, is made to

examine and recognize the foundational gaps in our communication and what steps to be taken to

bridge the gap.

The reasons behind the conduct of the study:

To help students become self-reliant by providing an exemplar of ‘examining your vocab’ in an

engaging and fun way fashion.

To recognize where we stand today as undergraduates and what strategies we opt for to become

linguistically sound in the near future.

To develop an idea of ‘getting comfortable with being uncomfortable’ by staying optimistic and

agile in communication.

The communication skills gained from the course we study verify the outcome in view of the

analytical skills and the ability to turn raw bits and pieces into hard findings, team-working

skills, self-management skills, and fundamentally, to display the improved learning outcomes.

Quantitative/Qualitative View of the Study:

A rubric is created based on the assessment of the quiz comprises of the multiple-choice

questionnaire, performance on paragraph writing about your favorite personality/character.

Moreover, for a broader context, observed by the course teacher herself, the outcome of the

evaluation criteria also adds up to the fact of participating in active learning programs such as

role-plays, interviews, and the presentations conducted in our communication skills’ regular

classes.

“Vocabulary is not an end in itself. A rich vocabulary makes the skills of listening, speaking,

reading, and writing easier to perform.”_ Paul Nation (2015)

Communication skills are highly valued in this world of globalization and digitalization.

Speaking to your client to booking a flight over a phone, keeping track of your online orders,

sales, and accounts, attending award ceremonies, conferences, conventions or fan social

gatherings, auctions, debates, exhibitions, fashion shows and festivals, a formal meetup like an

interview, seminars and webinars, workshops, etc., thus any protocol you encounter demands

competency in vocabulary and its proper exercise.

Taking the barrier into account, our education system by its definition is target-oriented

academia. From early grades of education, the main focus is to cover the syllabus. Unfortunately,

a learner who has exposure to the linguistic curriculum in primary and secondary education can

learn, read, write and listen to Basic English but feels reluctant to express their original ideas in

any verbal or writing communication platform. Adapting to an active learning system is found to

be helpful and effective in learning and development in this regard for instance engaging

children in a playful manner like dress-up and role-plays, imaginative, nature and sensory plays,

basic board games like scrabble, a guess play like hangman or a fun word search, etc. offer

creativeness and originality in developing and refining their linguistic skills. For linguistic

studies or degrees at the undergraduate level, we cover courses like commination skills and

technical writing, and core areas including syntax & semantics, phonetics, phonology, and

morphology, challenging students to produce presentations, individual and group projects,

research and dissertation work, etc. to learn and improve their soft skills and to serve the need of

workplace as qualified graduates on national and international platforms respectively.

Internationally, English Aptitude tests comprising verbal and writing-based tests i.e. vocabulary

tests, homophones tests, critical thinking and reasoning test, competitions like a spelling bee, and

English language tests such as IELTS, TOEFL, and various English Assessment tests are taken

so that writing, reading, listening and speaking skills of a candidate can be evaluated.

Life waits for no one. Practically, if you are aiming to learn new facts and figures so that

they become part of your knowledge or improving on to your pronunciation and accent,

tuning yourself up to become fluent and coherent linguistically, do it now; design your

day with a journal, read books, listen to audiobooks, stay informed and read news, study

and learn different languages with the critical understanding of grammar, sentence

making, vocabulary, develop a taste for literature, be curious and poetic, read articles and

blogs, watch documentaries, listen to live streaming and commentaries, write emails and

business proposals to associated clients, self –write, etc. by doing so, not only you will

evolve as a person but develop this enthusiastic aura around you as a passionate learner

and find yourself self–assured in making a right speech. Believe us, life will never be the

same.

Moreover, popular online platforms like Skill-share and YouTube offer a variety of

videos on ‘Improving your vocabulary with a step-wise strategy’, vocabulary in a certain

field like the names of the brands with correct pronunciation, workplace vocabulary, and

formal phrases in business and meetings, conversations between professionals, linguistic

teachers, comparison between English and Business English, etc. Additionally, there are

various incredible sites for vocabulary and its learning tricks such as Visuwords.com,

Word Sift, and e-Quiz. And English Club ESL Quizzes etc. engaging its users to learn in

a playful fashion.

In the same context, we concluded the group-based project on our communication skills

as an experimental study on our university fellow mates to assess the level of proficiency

they possess in making out interesting choices for the designed questionnaire in view of

the quantitative and qualitative approaches respectively. Moreover, the fifty selected

candidates were none other than our course-mates who were willing to participate and

use their potential to the fullest.

Moreover, the barrier and the method of approach we opted for in our group project has a

modest amount of preliminary study-based research papers or previous surveys to look after, but

no worries, less is more thereby we prepared a study that will act as an open invitation for

anyone to review and study. More on that later!
